WHEREAS: Ruth Hamilton lived a gloriously simple life that was rich in the important areas:- church, family, friends, community. She loved all of us and was able to evidence that love by her cheerful demeanor and Christian example. She led a bold and brave life. She accepted the things she could not change and she used the splendid gift that God gave her to celebrate and praise the God who gave the gift to her; and

WHEREAS: She was the formidable Ruth Hamilton, the Christian singer who shared her gifts with Christians and Jews, Muslims and Communists and Humanists and poor souls who could claim no polity; and

WHEREAS: She was first and foremost a Christian woman and everything else flowed from that. She flowed like a river engulfing her family and friends with her love and her celebration of the love of God, which defined her life; and

WHEREAS: Those who never met Marion Anderson—those who never heard Leontyne Price or Paul Robeson or Roland Hayes, met in Ruth the essence of them all—artistic genius as true and pure as could be. She gave her all for God. The world could applaud her but her eyes looked toward the heavens in thanksgiving and praise; and

WHEREAS: She was God’s woman—and for the doubting, learn well that you have, in Ruth Hamilton, known a woman who exemplified love, who suffered long, who was not puffed up, who was faithful in small things and in large things; and

WHEREAS: Our Ruth, Aunt Baby Ruth has closed her eyes now to take her rest. She has gone home to God. Halleluiah, Halleluiah, Halleluiah—Praise God for giving us the example of such a formidable religious woman. She was a rock that man, nor fire, nor sickness nor death could move; now therefore be it RESOLVED: Thank you God for sending this angel to dwell in our midst. We shall not hear her true voice again but we shall remember the sound, her sound, that sonorous contralto which filled the heart and touches the soul. That presence which filled the room and the area which all and a sudden transported us to the depth of the soul; and be it further

RESOLVED: Dear Ruth—thank you for blessing us with each day of your life. Thank you for your example; and be it further

RESOLVED: In your own words, you thought back to the time when African Americans were slaves and were not able to express themselves in any other way but through their Spirituals. You were not there in body, but their Spirit came to you and passed through you when you sang. You expressed their joys and sorrows, hopes and desires for future generations.
