Oil/Gas Extraction Competition Guidelines OEF Engineering Fair 2017 Registration deadline is February 1, 2017 by 5:00pm. All supplies will be mailed on February 3 (see note below regarding materials). Teams can be made of 3-4 students with a maximum of 15 students per school/5 teams.

Goal: Demonstrate your Energy Producing Team’s ability to extract as much oil as possible from the given reservoir, separate the contaminants, and transport your produced oil product to a storage vessel.

Rules:

1. The Oil reservoir must be placed on the floor.

2. Removal of the oil must be of mechanical and/or hydraulic means. Physical interaction with the reservoir by any team member is not allowed during the demonstration.

3. Once the competition begins, no hands or feet are allowed below the table. All pumping must occur from the tabletop or above.

4. Contaminants within the oil must be removed and the clean oil stored in your storage vessel. Storage vessel to be located on the table top.

5. The competition will have a 5 minute time limit.

Scoring:

1. Leaks accrue penalties

a. Large spill: max deduction of 30%

b. Small spill: minimum deduction of 5%

2. Volume of Oil produced

a. 40% of overall score

3. Quality of Oil (Removal of contaminants)

a. 20% of overall score

4. Speed of Oil Production Process

a. 10% of overall score

5. Design and Cost Quality

a. 30% of overall score

6. Bonus:

a. Preventative health, safety and environmental measures: max 10% Oil/Gas Extraction Competition Guidelines OEF Engineering Fair 2017

STEM Project Supply Guidelines

Included in your box you will find four plastic canisters and four syringes. You will be required to use two of the canisters in your design, one as the reservoir and one as the receptacle. The extra two containers are for testing purposes.

Also included is a $60 Walmart gift card. You do not have to use all of the items on the list below, but you cannot use any items that are not on the list below, with one exception. You can purchase one additional item, so long as it does not require the use of electricity and does not exceed your $60 budget. You cannot exceed $60 in supply purchases for this project and you must purchase all of your items at a Walmart to ensure equity in supply availability across the state.
