LO 1. Know the diverse nature of a local community LO2. Understand how attitudes about diversity can influence behaviour LO3. Know how to recognise and challenge discrimination LO4. Understand own attitudes and behaviours towards diversity
Task 1 Assessment Criteria 1.1 describe a diverse community 1.2 give examples of diversity in a local community
The first tab on the website will be entitled, “Round our way”. Your task is to populate this with photographs celebrating the diversity in your community, linked together with commentary about its impact. This will include text that: Describes your community Discusses what makes it diverse Talks about the similarities and differences that exist
Task 2 Assessment Criteria 2.1 discuss different attitudes towards diversity 2.2 explain how attitudes about diversity can influence behaviour
The next tab is entitled “Don’t look back in anger” and this section will contain a series of interview based case studies of people from your community. You should look to interview four different people from differing elements of your community. For each individual you should ask about their approaches to other members of society, their experiences of interacting with other groups and the impact of changing community. After each write-up, you should explain how the individual’s attitude is portrayed in their behaviour.
Task 3 Assessment criteria 3.1 define discrimination 3.2 describe ways to challenge discrimination
Tab 3 is “Where did it all go wrong?” and will look at discrimination. This section needs to build and reflect evidence of discrimination, its impacts and methods of challenging it. You are first to define discrimination to introduce the section. Then find news articles that have reported discrimination. Produce the headlines and discuss the nature of discrimination that occurred and how it was / how it should have been challenged. Unit 36: Exploring the Impact of Diversity in our Communities Sustainability
Task 4 Assessment criteria 4.1 review own attitudes and behaviours towards diversity 4.2 evaluate own attitudes and behaviours towards diversity

Talk about the issue considering: your initial thoughts when you became aware of it your opinions on those thoughts now what opportunities does it offer? what more do you need to know before you can change your opinion? why do you feel like you do about it?
Tutor Information
For this unit to be truly effective, students need to see diverse communities in action. You should explore this through trips, visits , case studies and topical news discussions. It is important to understand the ability of the group to interact with elements of the community and students should be encouraged to undertake open and honest debate.
Preparation for the assignment It is not necessary for students to actually build the website, but opportunities are there to integrate this unit with other areas of study as necessary. The aim is to bring a motivated ownership to the investigation and celebration of diversity issues.
Resources Learners will need access to appropriate internet and other research tools. Visits to a wide range of religious and cultural venues and/or use of speakers from diverse groups, such as Disability Rights Commission, would enhance unit delivery.
