ASSIGNMENT 1
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION – 10 MARKS
What "speech communities" or "networks" do you find in your school (or some sub-set thereof), workplace, or place of residence (choose one)? Select one to describe in detail.
a. Think about how you could divide the community into linguistically similar subgroups, based on social relations among the members.
b. What criteria would you use? c. Design a measure of network and/or community membership that is not linguistic, but that would allow you to show the network/community memberships in the community that you described. d. Give some examples (use made up or real people in the community) to show how you would apply your measure. ASSIGNMENT 2
ANSWER TWO OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS – 20 MARKS
1. Define and illustrate THREE of the following:
a. Co-operative principle
b. Social positioning
c. Conversational style
2. Discuss Braj Kachru's three different "circles" of World English. How is the development different in each circle, and what are some specific countries in each circle? You may refer to: Kachru, B.R. (1992) The Other Tongue: English across cultures. Urbana: University of Illinois Press.
3. Examine how girls and boys are portrayed in ONE of the popular children's books. Preferably select a book for a certain age group and make a table of who does the talking in each, what kind of talking each does (advising, complaining, informing, comforting, rebelling, etc.). How much talking to men, women, girls, and boys do relative to each other? Does your research suggest that children are taught at an early age to value male speech more than female speech?
