Your educational level? Graduated from medical school in Sofia; did specialization work in pediatrics in France.

What sort of work do/did you do? Doctor with specialization in pediatric hemotology

How religious was your parents’ home? How were you raised? I was religious until I was 14 or 15, then I became an atheist. We celebrated all the holidays. We went to the temple on Sabbath evening. I stopped keeping kosher in Hashomer Hatzair.

What is your mother tongue? Ladino

What other languages do you speak? French, Spanish, Serbian, Bulgarian and Macedonian – fluently Russian, German and English – some knowledge

Where were you during the Holocaust? 1941-42: Bitola 1943-44: Sofia (today Bulgaria) 1944-45: Pleven ghetto (today Bulgaria)

What did you do after the Holocaust? Worked as doctor in Kumonova for a year and then in Skopje. He was director of the children’s clinic and a professor at the medical university in Skopje. He has published more than 300 scientific works.

What sort of education did he have? Finished a religious school, midrasha [yeshivah]. Very well-educated with regard to religious things. He knew the Talmud by heart. He knew the Torah and Talmud very well. He read Aramaic and Talmudic books and translated them into Ladino. He had all those Talmudic books. He read and translated. And he translated well. He did not speak Hebrew but he could translate it, and well. He knew the Talmud and so did my grandfather.

What sort of work did he do? Sold old clothing for some time and then material from animal hides (i.e. leather)

How religious was he? Very religious. He observed the kashrut, Sabbath and holidays.
