1. Closing Meet. Saturday, March 22 at 2:30 PM, cookout to follow the hunt.

Our Closing Meet is this Saturday! Bring something for the grill. BYOB. Cost is $10 per Rockbridge Hunt member unless you have pre-arranged to bring food or volunteer in some other way. Laura Jarvis is coordinating the cookout. If you would like to help in some way, please contact her directly at 540- 817-9216 or [email protected]. Remember to make reservations ASAP with Hugh Brown at [email protected] or 540-886-6359. Thank you!

Plans for this Saturday are for ratcatcher attire or a reasonable facsimile. If the weather is very warm or if the ground is very muddy, we may switch to casual attire. Please check the hunt line on Friday night. And you might want to be prepared for a last-minute change on Saturday.

There is a slim chance that we might schedule an additional day of hunting on Sunday, March 23 or on Wednesday, March 26. Again, please check the hunt line.

We hope to see you there!

2. Protective Head Gear. In these increasingly litigious times, our insurance company has made it clear that we need to require all participants in riding events to wear protective head gear at all times while riding. So if you are hunting, hound walking, trail riding, hunter pacing, schooling, horse showing, or poker riding, please wear protective head gear and make certain your guests do the same. We can not function without our insurance coverage. Thank you!

3. Maury River Hunter Trails. The organizing committee of the very popular Maury River Hunter Trails has announced the 5th annual renewal of the event on Saturday, April 5 at the Virginia Horse Center. The prize list will be the same as last year and the judges will be Penny Denegre, MFH and Jeff Blue, MFH of the Middleburg Hunt. There is a Facebook page for the hunter trials and the prize list will be posted there soon. The event organizers are looking for sponsors and vendors. Our own Liz Hall is on the organizing committee again this year and can answer specific questions. Liz can be reached at [email protected].

6. Annual Meeting. Wednesday, May 14 at 7:00 PM at the Tex Tilson Lodge at The Hunt, Inc. Please plan to attend our important annual meeting. We will be voting on the proposed budget for the 2014-15 year, electing officers for the new year, and discussing other matters important to our organization. In order for the Hunt to conduct business, there must be a quorum of 20 members physically present.

NEWS FLASH! New this year, we’ll be having a spaghetti dinner before the Annual Meeting at 6:00 PM at the Tex Tilson Lodge. Carol Lueder is organizing this event for us. So, please plan to come early and have dinner with your friends from the Hunt. We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting and spaghetti dinner!

Hunting terminology: Breastplate

Forget Boadicea! This is an article of equine apparel designed to fit round the shoulders to prevent the saddle slipping back when going up steep places. People say it is unnecessary, but I would not like to have a day's stag-hunting or ride in very steep places on a horse with narrow shoulders without one. It is nearly always used by show jumpers and eventers.
