HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING 2 What about Christ this Christmas? This is a question we often ask ourselves. Even in the middle of the pandemic, in the midst of these socalled holidays that the world brings us, often Christmas is trapped with the many things that it brings but not with Christ. The world sees Christmas more with reindeers, poetry, gifts, and even shop windows that catch our attention. How do we see it? Each morning, as soon as our alarm goes off, before being taken by our daily grind and rescheduled Zooms, before that fear and anxiety would take over everything we have to do, let us say: “Come Emmanuel! Help us to surrender everything to You today!” In this way, Jesus would be the center of our day; whatever would happen, He would not leave us alone. This is a way of getting ready for Christmas. After all, without that “little baby”, there would not be Resurrection. He came to the world and filled the darkness with his great light and changed forever the meaning of Love. He is the pure love who gives light to every person. In less than two weeks we are going to celebrate Jesus’ birth. This Christmas, let's get ready for His coming! Third Sunday of Advent Three weeks until our new parish, Saint Jude, officially begins. The responsorial psalm of today's liturgy is Mary's prayer, the , from the of Luke, her prayer of joy, hope, and confidence. We know that change isn’t easy, that leaving the past be- hind is difficult, and that no one knows what will happen in the future. But we are a pilgrim people of God, a people filled with hope who are confident that with Jesus as our head and the Holy Spirit as our guide we will become a united parish community. Our mission this Advent and always is to be a parish community that effectively pro- claims Jesus’ Gospel of divine mercy and truly witnesses to it by our lives. Let us con- tinue to pray for our parish clergy team, our parish staff, and our leadership councils, that they will fearlessly lead us to be disciples of our coming Savior. His coming means our joy and gladness, our hope for the future.

We need you extra support more than ever before I am sending a letter to all registered parishioners this coming week expressing my prayerful best wishes to everyone at Christmas. These are such difficult times to try to maintain a sense of parish community. I know we all miss this dimension of being a parish. My letter will also announce the special plans for the celebrations that will be held on January 9 and 10, which officially launches Saint Jude Parish. I hope my letter will let you know that you are truly in my thoughts and prayers. I want you to know that we will do our best to decorate both of our churches for Christmas but for the obvious reasons we have decided to drastically cut back on the interior decorations. We will do everything we can to make both churches beautiful for the Nativity of the Lord, but the decorations will not be what they normally are. Please help us by donating to the Christmas Flower Fund by using the special envelope in the monthly packets. I also remind you that our parish really needs your extra support more than ever before. Please consider including our parish in your end of the year gift planning and in the special Christmas Day Collec- tion envelope. Any extra help you can give this year will be deeply appreciated. Wednesday Yearning for Sacred We would like to welcome Father Mike Ackerman to our grouping this week! Father Mike is the current director of vocations for the diocese of Pittsburgh and a familiar face at Sacred Heart and St. Raphael's Church. He will come celebrate this Wednesday evening's Mass at 6:30pm at St. Raphael’s Church. Mass will be preceded by a half hour of Eucharistic Adora- tion and followed by a talk on “Yearning for the Sacred” by our own Focolare community! As you probably know, one of our Focolare community house is in our Grouping and is made up of four lay consecrated women. We look forward to seeing you for this Wednesday evening’s Mass and reflection!

Keeping Christ in Christmas The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers offer the following suggestions regarding “Keeping Christ in Christmas”: 1. Use postage stamps that feature a religious theme. 2. Hang an and open a window on the calendar each day. 3. Display your nativity set in a window or on the lawn where others can see it. 4. Place a candle in the window to symbolize the light of Christ. 5. Listen to traditional Christmas carols that honor Christ’s birth. 6. Call radio stations and television channels requesting Christmas carols and stories. 7. Ask stores for religious Christmas wrapping paper and decorations. 8. Read Christmas scripture and stories to children. 9. Purchase a gift, wrap it, and give it to the poor M and encourage a child to do the same. 10. Research and then explain the tradition of the original Christmas tree. 11. During the Christmas season, enjoy reading daily Advent Reflections. 12. Use decorations with “Merry Christmas” instead of “Happy Holidays”. 13.Have a child place a straw in the crèche for each good deed done as a gift to the Baby Jesus during Advent. 14.Pray for the young, so that when they become adults they will not regard Christmas as just another holiday free from work.

Rorate Caeli Mass in Honor of The Blessed Virgin Mary The Rorate Caeli Mass is a traditional Advent devotion wherein the of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the of the Lord is offered just before dawn. In many instances families and individuals travel an hour or more, rising and arriving very early for this stunningly beautiful Mass. The interplay of light and darkness speak to the meaning of Advent and the coming of the Light of the world. The Mass takes its title, Rorate Caeli, from the first words of the , which are from Isaiah 45:8: ‘Rorate, caeli, desuper, et nubes pluant justum, aperiatur terra, et germinet Salvatorem.’ ‘Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain the just: let the earth be opened and bud forth a Saviour.’ The Rorate Mass is lit only by candlelight. Because it is a votive Mass in Mary’s honor, white vestments are worn instead of Advent violet. In the dimly lit setting, priests and faithful prepare to honor the Light of the world, who is soon to be born, and offer praise to God for the gift of Our Lady. As the Mass proceeds and sunrise approaches, the church becomes progressively brighter, illumined by the sun as our Faith is illumined by Christ. The readings and prayers of the Mass foretell the prophecy of the Virgin who would bear a Son called Emmanu- el, and call on all to raise the gates of their hearts and their societies to let Christ the King enter; asking for the grace to receive eternal life by the merits of the Incarnation and saving Resurrection of Our Lord.” (Excerpt taken from fssp.com/ rorarecaelimasses). The Rorate Caeli Mass will be celebrated on the morning of Friday December 18th at 7am in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel in Sacred Heart Church. Please invite friends and family to come participate. All are wel- come to attend this beautiful Advent Liturgy!

A Big Thanks from Hearts for Haiti!! Despite enormous challenges this year, Fr. Joseph and the Sisters of St. Antoine are deeply grateful to you for your partnership in sustaining their ministry at St. Antoine School in rural Fondwa. Your generous donations through "Hearts for Haiti" supported the teacher salaries so that 600 students could continue their quest for a better life through education. Looking ahead to bolster, food security, Partners in Progress is helping the sisters to purchase a solar water pump to enhance the growing seasons on their farm and to prevent the loss of crops by bringing irrigation when there is a lack of rain. A matching grant will complete the purchase of the solar pump if $3000 can be raised. The water pump promises to be a gift that keeps on giving! To help bring a happier New Year to Fondwa, make checks to "Partners in Progress" with "SSA/pump" on the memo line. Mail to Partners in Progress at PO Box 11278, Pittsburgh,PA 15238.
