This information has been provided to assist students preparing entries to the Anzac Indigenous Cultural Study Tour 2017.  Ensure your school is aware of your intention to apply.  If you have any questions regarding the application package [Parts A-F] or if there is anything you do not understand, please contact International Services on telephone 3513 5747 or by email at: i n t erna t io n a l ser v ic e s @ d e t. q l d . g o v . au before submitting your application.  Ensure you have read and fully completed the application package [Parts A-F] available at: https://indigenousportal.eq.edu.au/training/students/Pages/Anzac-Indigenous-Cultural- Study-Tour.aspx.  Ensure you address the following key questions: 1. Why is the Anzac tradition still important? 2. Why did Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people volunteer to serve at a time when they were not considered Australian Citizens? 3. Explain how their contribution to conflict made a difference. Give an example of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service person and their involvement and participation in the war or conflict they served in.

– Your multimedia presentation should refer to what the Anzac tradition has come to mean and its historical background in relation to the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service people. – Present an historical argument in response to the questions above.  You may wish to source material from interviews, the experiences of friends or relatives, media resources and individual research.  Ensure you include a list of references which acknowledges all of the material you use. Please use the author-date system for referencing.  Keep your multimedia presentation to the set time limit of 2–5 minutes.  Ensure you submit the required file type (and suggested size, if able): – multimedia files must be less than 100Mb to be accepted (preferably less than 10Mb). – if you need to reduce the size of your file to less than 100Mb, consider using a software program that allows you to reduce the file size (e.g. Xilisoft Video Converter, Camtasia etc). – ensure your multimedia file is in one of the following formats: mov, mp4, ppt or wmv. – if you need to convert your file to mov, mp4 or wmv, consider using a file converter (e.g. Xilisoft Video Converter, Camtasia etc).  Review the judging criteria available online at: https://indigenousportal.eq.edu.au/training/students/Pages/Anzac-Indigenous-Cultural- Study-Tour.aspx and ensure your presentation meets the criteria. Keep the criteria in mind and think of interesting and effective ways to communicate information.  Suggestions from judges to improve your presentation: – Audio must be clearly heard. o good voice over/narration in the presentation. o be aware of external elements such as wind/traffic/water background noise. o watch pace, enunciation and pronunciation.  Appropriate marriage of visual, audio and text is essential. o Choose a typeface that supports your words not necessarily ones you think look good. o All visual images need to support your presentation otherwise ask yourself, why are they there? o Select appropriate backgrounds. Don’t sit in the middle of a paddock and talk about the city. o If you are going to feature in the video, dress appropriately. o Make sure any images are historically correct. If you are not sure look at source of image or ask someone. WW2 images may look the same as WW1 but they are not. o Ensure that spelling, punctuation and grammar are correct. o Use of inclusive pronouns (‘we’ ‘our’…not just ‘I’ ‘me’ ‘my’…).

– Interviews with current or previous serving members of the Australian Defence Force can be powerful but o interviews should be short and edited for effect o must be relevant to argument and narration.

– Multi-media presentation content: o Argument must feature the development of a clear central thesis which is reiterated in conclusion. o Local emphasis can add to the power of a student’s personal views on the Anzac experience and tradition. o Aspects (past, present and future) must be addressed – explicitly or implicitly. o The use of a variety of war history/evidence to support main contention including specific examples.

o ‘Anzacs gave their tomorrow for our today’ – use of powerful quotes. o Explanation of the personal benefits from completing task can be effective. o Information about applicants’ own personal experiences of the Anzac tradition can be powerful. o Conclusion needs to be strong and persuasive. – Bibliography/reference list MUST be included in the presentation and should cover images as well as other sources. – Technology should be used effectively. The possibilities are limitless!  Save your multimedia presentation and scanned application forms onto one USB storage device and send USB plus hardcopy of your application to the following address, to be received by 5pm, 21 April 2017:
