US Health Industries Sector Mid-Semester Module Spring 2010
We are excited about the US Healthcare Mid-Semester Module starting this Thursday. Below is information to get you started for class. We will review the schedule in more detail the first day of class, Thursday, February 25th at 8:30am in Room 201. I will be helping facilitate the class so please don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions. I will be sure to monitor the conference for any general questions.
Class Structure The class will be grouped by sector or stakeholder perspective to facilitate small group discussion and assigned to a case challenge team that will include a representative from each sector. The attached file contains your sector and case team assignments. Throughout class discussion, you will be responsible for representing your assigned sector in terms of their perspective, business drivers, issues impacting the sector, etc. Please use the pre-read material to familiarize yourself with your sector. The sectors are listed below with a brief description. • Providers - Academic Medical Centers, Private Physicians (primary care and specialists), Integrated Health Systems. Examples include: Emory Healthcare, Grady Health System, Scott & White Physician Group, HCA • Payers - Health Insurance Companies. Examples include: Wellpoint, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Humana • Life Sciences - Includes pharmaceutical companies, medical device manufacturers, and biotech companies. Examples include: Pfizer, Roche, Merck, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Genentech • Government - This includes both the Federal and State perspective and government's role in financing public health programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. Additionally, consider government's role in healthcare delivery via the Department of Veterans Affairs • Consumers - You, the patient. Think of patient advocacy groups like AARP, Families USA, etc. • Employers - Large corporations, small businesses, non-profits that provide employer sponsored health insurance to employees

Pre-Read We have included several current articles regarding each of the discussions that will take place during the module in the folders on the conference. Reading the articles will provide background on current events in these areas. It is suggested that you read at least a couple articles from each folder to get a background regarding the topics discussed each day. Please reference the schedule above to see what topics will be discussed each day.
The Industry Reference documents are provided as optional and may be useful in terms of macro trends and issues facing the various sectors of the healthcare industry.
Please note, we will have an outside panel Monday, March 1st so please dress business casual and come prepared with questions for the panel.
