Resumes for Accounting Internships

Your resume is your marketing tool to attract an employer to you. It represents your first opportunity to distinguish yourself from others seeking an internship. You do not have to include negative information about yourself, but whatever information you share on the resume must be factual. Limit your resume to one page of information. Your resume should include the following information:

 Name  ASU address  Email address(es)  Education  Major  Expected graduation date (BSBA & MS if applicable)  Cumulative GPA & Accounting GPA (include accounting principles courses)  If GPA is below 3.0 it still needs to be included. Be prepared to address why it is below a 3.0.  Professional experience  List from most recent to least recent  Include brief description of duties and/or skills you use in the job  Achievements & Awards  Extracurricular activities  Leadership

If you work to independently finance your education and personal living expenses, consider including that fact.

NOTE: Do not include any of the following:  High school education, activities, or honors (work experience can go back to high school days, but nothing else); HOWEVER, civic-related activities and awards would be appropriate to include (for example, attaining Eagle Scout)  An objective statement (while necessary for a general resume, it is not needed for purposes of the internship program)  References or any mention of them such as “references available upon request” (however, you should be ready to give a list of references if asked by an employer; remember, proper protocol is to ask a person if they will be a reference before giving out their name)

Just to restate the beginning: Your resume is your marketing tool to attract an employer to you. It represents your first opportunity to distinguish yourself from others seeking an internship. You do not have to include negative information about yourself, but whatever information you share on the resume must be factual. Limit your resume to one page!
