TE RAU PUAWAI BURSARIES A further three-year commitment to increasing the professionalism of the Māori mental health workforce has been undertaken by Health Workforce New Zealand and Massey University. Each year the Te Rau Puawai Workforce programme provides bursaries for students who are seeking to commence or complete a University qualification in Māori mental health at Massey University. By 2011, over two hundred Te Rau Puawai bursary holders had graduated with undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications.

Students who are awarded bursaries subject to eligibility into a Massey University qualification will be able to enter or continue with a Massey University programme in Nursing, Social Work and Social Policy, Psychology, Rehabilitation, Māori Health, Health Science and Māori Studies. In return, there is an expectation that, once they have graduated, students will continue or contribute towards Māori mental health by opting for employment in a relevant Māori mental health service. To assist students, a mentoring programme has been arranged and a full-time co-ordinator, full-time support tutors, and academic mentors will provide academic advice and general learning support.

Both Health Workforce New Zealand and Massey University are confident that Te Rau Puawai will lead to a greatly enhanced Māori mental health workforce and will play a valuable role in improving Māori mental health.

The benefits of Te Rau Puawai are:

 Bursary (this includes payment of course fees, a contribution to travel and accommodation costs associated with contact courses)  Access to a support tutor  Provision of an academic mentor  Individual learning and personal support  Assistance with course planning  Essay writing and study skills workshops  Advocacy  Access to Māori community and student networks, and  CV and interview preparation.

The responsibilities of students to Te Rau Puawai are to:

 Complete the studies undertaken through Te Rau Puawai  Attend classes, contact courses, and exams  Attend compulsory Te Rau Puawai conferences and seminars  Maintain regular fortnightly contact with the Te Rau Puawai support team  Focus studies and employment in the area of Māori mental health, and  Advise Te Rau Puawai and lecturers immediately of any challenges that may hinder your study progress.
