1. Executive Director’s Reflection * Hello to all of you. I send greetings and these brief reflections from northern Wisconsin at our extended family’s shared cottage where I am taking some vacation time with my family. Time with our children and grandchildren, loons, a placid, clear lake, quiet woods, and good walks have filled our days. I have been remembering, and being grateful for, you, your ministry, and the NACC in these days as well. May each of you find some time for personal renewal during these summer days.

It was good to reflect again on yesterday’s Gospel of the Good Samaritan from Luke. It is so familiar to us, isn’t it? The title of Good Samaritan is used by so many organizations, and the name adorns the front of many hospitals, as well. It is the classic story of someone going out of their way to help another in distress. (Read more >)

2. Member news * NACC member Sister Janet Slingerland SSMO is celebrating her Jubilee (50 years) with the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon. She, along with her fellow Jubilarians, will be honored during a Mass Sunday, July 28, at 1:30 p.m. in the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chapel of the Sisters' motherhouse at 4440 SW 148th Ave., Beaverton, Oregon.

3. Death of member Janice Tomlonovic * We recently learned of the death of our member Janice Tomlonovic. We commend her to the Lord. Her sister sent the following message:

My name is Mary Henry, I am Janice Tomlonovic's sister. I would like to tell you that Janice passed away April 22, 2013 after suffering a massive cerebellum hemorrhage and stroke on April 19. Janice had lived close to me during her time in California; and I had been her power of attorney and now executor of her estate. For the 8 months preceding her passing, she had been living at the Mercy Retirement and Care Center in Oakland, Ca while adjusting to the affects of dementia. I know your organization played a vital role in Janice's professional life; one that she was extremely happy and proud of to be a member of. Your organization gave her the opportunity to grow and be involved in your important work outside her day to day job at Mercy San Juan, Carmichael, CA.

We had a funeral mass for her at her residence in April with the burial to follow in the summer in Iowa. The family has arranged for a Memorial Mass at our home parish in Colfax, Iowa and the burial in the family plot also in Colfax, Iowa. One of her colleagues from Mercy San Juan as agreed to travel to Iowa to officiate at this service. We would like to invite you all to her services and the memory sharing following. It will be at:

Immaculate Conception Catholic Church 305 East Howard St Colfax, Iowa 50054

Burial: Colfax Cemetery

Continuation of sharing of her life at the Pat Tomlonovic Farm 4866 W. 84th St Colfax, Iowa 50054

There will be an opportunity at the service for anyone to speak of Janice and her work.

5. Into technology? How about art or music? *

“Spiritual care meets social media and technology” is the theme of the September-October 2013 issue of Vision. Writers are needed to explore related issues, such as, EPIC, the benefits and challenges; the next steps in e-chaplaincy; using LinkedIn to connect with other chaplains; downloaded songs to use at the bedside; the best apps for in-house ministry. Deadline is Aug. 1. Contact Laurie Hansen Cardona, Vision editor, at [email protected].

“Using art and music to enhance ministry” is the theme of the November-December 2013 issue of Vision. How has music or art changed the way you practice spiritual care? What has been the impact on patients? Can the addition of art or music distract from matters of the heart and the real issues at hand? Share your knowledge by writing an article for Vision. Deadline is Oct. 1. Contact Laurie Hansen Cardona, Vision editor, at [email protected].

6. The July/August issue of Vision has been published! * The latest issue is all about our recent National Conference this past April. Click here to read it now! Remember that you no longer need your member number to access the Vision; just go to www.nacc.org/vision! Continued thanks to Laurie Hansen-Cardona and the Editorial Advisory Panel for their excellent work!

7. Please watch CHA's new "Ready, Get Set, Enroll" video As you are aware, millions of uninsured people will soon become eligible to sign up for healthcare coverage under the Affordable Care Act. The Catholic Health Association is a founding member of Enroll America, a coalition working to inform Americans about the new coverage opportunities becoming available. Starting in October, eligible people will be able to sign up for insurance benefits that become effective in January 2014. Help get the word out!

Enroll America has launched a public awareness and grassroots campaign, Get Covered America, to explain how enrollment works and who is eligible. As part of that effort, CHA has produced a new video to help inform members of your staff and community.

Having worked so hard on behalf of meaningful health reform, CHA and its members can now play a role in educating Americans about what’s coming: state-based health insurance marketplaces, expanded Medicaid and many other changes that will improve healthcare access and quality.

Share CHA’s enrollment video, “Ready, Get Set, Enroll” today. Place it on your website, Facebook page, Twitter feed, employee newsletter and any other place you communicate with stakeholders. youtu.be/K5N1j_StJuE.

Get Covered America is also providing enrollment resources at www.getcoveredamerica.org.

Also, click here to read a letter from Enroll America's Board of Directors encouraging efforts to spread the word.

8. Your Survey Input is Essential to the Creation of a Program to Empower Staff in Supporting Children in Acute Grief Chaplains know all too well that the death of a loved one is singularly distressing to young people who have yet to develop a true conception of death or the coping mechanisms of adults. As chaplains report from their acute care experience, deaths of a parent, grandparent, sibling or other family member often happen quite suddenly or catastrophically and the surviving children are often left to fend for themselves emotionally…(Continued >)
