14 102 MDG FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS AT CANNON The 102nd Medical Group sent a team of highly qualified EMT medics to Cannon AFB, New Mexico, to participate in the annual Air Force EMT Skills Rodeo from 6-10 Aug. This event tested Airmen’s emergency medical knowledge and lifesaving skills in both a practical classroom setting and while taking fire from “simulated” hostile enemy combatants. The top notch abilities that have been honed through their Air National Guard training, as well as their civilian careers, allowed these professionals to return with third place honors out of a field of 22 active duty Air Force Teams. 16 VEHICLE MAINTENANCE KEEPS THE FLEET ROLLING (DIGGING AND LIFTING TOO)

102nd Intelligence Wing vehicle maintenance personnel maintain a fleet of over 160 vehicles by 17 different manufacturers. With such a diverse fleet of vehicles, military and civilian Airmen must be well versed in each, in order to provide routine maintenance and repair of all of these vehicles, some of which are very specialized. One specific example of this are digger derricks; heavy equipment that have the capability of digging holes, hoisting and setting heavy items such as utility poles on a specialized chassis. Equipment such as the digger derrick are critical to the success of the missions of the 102nd Civil Engineer Squadron and 212th Engineering Installation Squadron. The wing recently funded a three-day training class for maintainers and operators of the digger derrick. Airmen were trained on how to correctly check the vehicle before daily use, the proper types of fluids that should be used on the equipment, as well as the processes for checking and adjusting hydraulic and electrical systems. Education was also received on the appropriate safety protection and available safety devices that should be used during operation to prevent personal injury and property damage. 18 This T-33 Shooting Star static display honoring Gen. Daniel “Chappie” James Jr. was taken down on September 14, 2018. The aircraft that had been on display for decades is not actually one that Chappie flew, but was painted to memorialize his service. It is in extremely poor condition so it will not be refurbished. Another T-33, in much better condition, is currently being restored and repainted, and will be displayed as part of the wing’s new static display airpark on Otis ANGB. Gen. James was the first African American four-star general in the United States Military and served as an all-weather jet fighter pilot at Otis Air Force Base in the 1950s. In April 1953 he became commander of the 437th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, and in August 1955 he assumed command of the 60th FIS on base. The group departed the base shortly after in a caravan of over a dozen vehicles, making their way up to the affected area.
