1. Describe the use of homophony in the Baroque era. How did it affect Opera during this time?

2. Why do you think that the Opera genre was such a success in this era? Which composers where the most known for this style of writing?

3. During the Baroque era one instrument entered its “Golden Age,” name this instrument and tell why it was during this era it flourished. Name the composer who was most known for composing for it.

4. Opera became very popular during the Baroque Period. Where did it get its start and who was the Composer who wrote the most opera’s.

5. Describe the difference in musical style between the Renaissance Period and the Baroque Period. What made each period similar and what made them unique.

6. Choose one of the following composers: Henry Purcell, Claudio Monteverdi or J. S. Bach. Write a brief bio of their musical careers. You are to include their Musical training, genres that they composed for and list 3 of their “greatest hits.”

7. Handel composed “Water Music” as a suite of dance movements. Describe each movement. What do you think they were to represent?

8. Search the internet for the following song, 1st Movement of Cantata No. 40 (Awake, A Voice Calls to Us) by J. S. Bach, what was this movement of the composition based on? Please be specific.

9. Baroque Musicians tried to use “what technique” to “move their audieinces?” (Not physically moving them!!)

10. Choose one composer from the Renaissance Period and one composer from the Baroque Period and compare/contrast their careers. Who did they work for? What type of music (genre) did they compose for? How did their music sound similar/How did it sound different?
