Purpose This unit standard is for people who work in the light leather manufacturing sector of the fellmongery or leather processing industries.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: interpret company processing requirements; set up wet wheeling machinery for operation; operate wet wheeling machinery and wet wheel light leather; describe the effects of incorrect light leather wet wheeling operations; describe processing stages preceding and following light leather wet wheeling operations; demonstrate team-work; and comply with organisational and statutory hygiene and safety requirements.

1.2 Production planning priorities are identified in accordance with company and customer requirements.
1.3 Departures from company specifications are checked and authorised in accordance with company requirements.
1.4 The completion of lead-in production processes is checked against production information and confirmed before processing commences.

2.1 Safety checks prior to machinery start-up are carried out in accordance with company requirements.
2.2 Any machines failing safety checks are reported in accordance with company requirements.
2.3 Machinery adjustments meet company specifications for the leather type and quality required.
2.4 Wet wheeling machinery is set up in accordance with leather processing requirements, production planning priorities, and company specifications.
2.5 Set-up permits leather to be wet wheeled within company specified tolerances for the quality required.

3.6 Processed leather meets company quality tolerance specifications.
3.7 Any processing problems affecting leather quality are identified and reported in accordance with company requirements.
3.8 Wheel surface and wheeled skin quality are monitored and assessed in accordance with company method and sequence specifications.
3.9 Processed leather is presented, stacked, and transferred to the next stage of processing in accordance with company specifications.
3.10 Process control checks and documentation are completed in accordance with company requirements.

Describe the effects of incorrect light leather wet wheeling operations.
Evidence requirements
4.1 The effects of incorrect wet wheeling operations are described in terms of the cost to the tannery.
Range effects include but are not limited to – damage, requirements for rework, customer dissatisfaction, financial loss.

Describe processing stages preceding and following light leather wet wheeling operations.
Range processing stages include but are not limited to – key processing steps, production outcomes, quality outcomes, effects of non-conformance.

6.7 Conflict resolution techniques are applied to minimise interpersonal differences with co-workers which may adversely affect team performance in accordance with organisational requirements.

7.3 Any unsafe and unhygienic conditions are identified and reported to supervisory staff in accordance with organisational requirements.
