He then served in the United States 32 Army for two years and was stationed at Fort Jackson, where he 33 managed the Armed Forces Radio station WFJX; and 34 35 Whereas, after completing his military service, he returned to 36 Jacksonville until joining WIS TV in 1963, and since then he has 37 served at various times as anchor of The 7:00 Report, weatherman 38 for WIS Live at Five, cohost of WIS News Midday, and host of The 39 Mr. Knozit Show; and 40 41 Whereas, in the 1960s, Joe Pinner began to delight children in the 42 Midlands with The Mr. Knozit Show, for which he received the
[664] 2 1 national George Foster Peabody award in 1967, and over the years 2 those children, now adults, grew to depend on his reporting on 3 WIS; and 4 5 Whereas, although he now enjoys semiretirement, he still remains 6 active at the station and can be seen on various newscasts on 7 Friday’s, thus our Mr. Knozit has become our “Joe Friday”; and 8 9 Whereas, his countless awards from around the State have 10 included the South Carolina Tourism Award from the Myrtle 11 Beach Chamber of Commerce in 1976 for his contribution to the 12 growth and development of the tourism industry in South Carolina, 13 appointment as “Emperor” of Little Mountain in 1982, initiation 14 into Omicron Kappa Delta at Columbia College as an honorary 15 member in 1990, and the addition of his star to The Celebrity Walk 16 of Fame in Myrtle Beach in 1993; and 17 18 Whereas, in 1993, he received the Masters Award from the South 19 Carolina Broadcasters Association, an award which honors 20 individuals for distinguished careers as onair broadcasters in South 21 Carolina, and in 1998, he was inducted into the South Carolina 22 Entertainment Hall of Fame; and 23 24 Whereas, in 1982, Governor Richard Riley named Joe Pinner to 25 the Order of the Palmetto, the state’s highest civilian honor. In 26 1993 for service to the State, Governor Carroll Campbell awarded 27 him the honor again upon the celebration of his thirtieth 28 anniversary with WIS; and upon semiretirement in 2000, he 29 received the award a third time for his work as “Mr. Knozit” from 30 Governor Jim Hodges; and 31 32 Whereas, among his numerous public service commitments, he 33 serves on the Philharmonic’s Advisory Council, and as narrator 34 and master of ceremonies for the South Carolina Philharmonic 35 Orchestra youth concerts, is a member of the Blythewood Cultural 36 Arts Association, and as an ambassador of Honor Flight SC; and 37 38 Whereas, he is a member of the Media Club, Some Legendary Old 39 Broadcasters (SLOBS), Greater Columbia Community Relations 40 Luncheon Club, Friday the 13th Club, and Trinity United 41 Methodist Church choir in Blythewood; and 42
[664] 3 1 Whereas, together with his beloved his wife, Peggy, he reared two 2 fine sons, Michael and Gregg, who blessed their parents with four 3 devoted grandchildren; and 4 5 Whereas, the members of the General Assembly appreciate the 6 dedication with which Joe Pinner has served his community and 7 the State and wish him continued success in all his future 8 endeavors. Now, therefore, 9 10 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 11 concurring: 12 13 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 14 resolution, recognize and honor Joe Pinner for his outstanding 15 contributions to the Palmetto State and congratulate him upon his 16 golden anniversary with WIS TV. 17 18 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 19 Joe Pinner. 20 XX 21
