First Six Weeks: Week #1:

Monday, August 25th:

Introduction to classes: 1. Hand out rules and guidelines. 2. Go over supply list. 3. Go over SSR guidelines; extra credit opportunities with SSR. 4. Multiple Intelligences Survey HW: Supplies need to be brought to class with you by tomorrow if possible and Friday at the latest, and you must also have an SSR novel by Friday.

Tuesday, August 26th:

1. Sponge Activity: SAT Words and analogies activity (10 words). 2. Finish the multiple intelligence survey from yesterday and share a few. 3. Reading Strategies: Put the following sentence stems on the board for students to complete in their writing notebook (spiral) after reading the piece: a. I wonder why… b. I think… c. This reminds me of… d. Why does the author…? e. I like the way the author… 4. Have students use these skills as we read the inspirational story, “Roses in December” to the students.

Wednesday, August 27th:

1. Sponge activity: Finish the sentence stems from yesterday. Share some of these and discuss together. 2. Hand out time line foldable worksheet for the students. Give the following page numbers for them to find the information on: Pages 26-33 – first three time periods on the handout 3. Students will then write down important events that took place during the time period; students need to include: dates of the time period, major authors of the time period, major works of the time period, and major historical events of the time period, etc… 4. Begin introduction to Native American Literature with powerpoint Thursday, August 28th:

1. Finish powerpoint and begin Native American poetry (using the small anthology or textbook or library) 2. Follow the typed instructions for partner activity. 3. Write Native American poem per typed instructions on overhead.

Friday, August 29th:

(SSR Day #1: American Author /Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter) 1. Hand out reading schedule for Scarlet Letter and any vocabulary or study guides that will go with it. 2. Read novel.

Week #2:

Monday, September 1st: Labor Day

Tuesday, September 2nd:

1. SAT Vocabulary and homophones. 2. Students read page 36 for background information on a Native American Creation story. 3. Students read pages 38-44 (“The World on the Turtle’s Back”) 4. Students answer questions 5-7 on page 45.

Wednesday, September 3rd:

1. Finish activities from yesterday; discuss together. 2. Reflection journal: Why do we root for the bad guy? Page 47 3. Read about Mourning Dove on page 56 and record 5 facts in notes. 4. Listen to “Coyote and the Buffalo”, page 48-52. 5. Students answer #5 on page 53.

Thursday, September 4th:

1. Sponge Activity: Grammar lesson: Simple and Compound Sentences 2. Finish yesterday’s activities. 3. Take test on Native American Literature.

Friday, September 5th: 1. SSR - Students will read their novel and continue working on assignments. Students should have Chapters 1-7 read by Monday, 9/15.

Week #3:

Monday, September 8th:

1. Students take notes on literature elements: conflict, setting, and sensorial imagery. 2. Students begin reading about Olaudah Equiano, page 82, and record 5 facts about him in their notes. 3. Listen to the excerpt, pages 84-88. Point out conflict, setting and imagery. While listening students complete dialectic journal finding a quote for each element covered and responding to those quotes.

Tuesday, September 9th:

1. Sponge Activity: SAT words and homographs 2. Finish activities from yesterday. 3. Begin reading Chapter 10 in Frederick Douglass’s narrative. Students complete dialectic journal on Frederick Douglass’s excerpt also.

Wednesday, September 10th:

1. Sponge Activity: page 83, What does it mean to be a slave? 2. Finish all activities from Frederick Douglass.

Thursday, September 11th:

1. Sponge Activity: Grammar Complex Sentences 2. Introduce literary analysis over slave narratives. 3. Students review format and example paragraph. 4. Students choose which element and which narrative to analyze. Begin writing.

Friday, September 12th:

1. SSR: Students must have Chapters 1-7 read by Monday (Quiz over those chapters that day).

Week #4:

Monday, September 15th: 1. Take quiz over chapters 1-7 (Scarlet Letter) 2. Students continue writing analysis over slave narrative of choice. Rough draft due tomorrow. HMWK: Study vocab; quiz tomorrow.

Tuesday, September 16th:

1. Sponge Activity: SAT Vocab quiz. 2. Students will continue writing analysis on slave narrative

Wednesday, September 17th:

1. Explain peer editing process (Ledbetter handout). 2. Students work in pairs, peer editing each other’s papers using instructions from handout. 3. Students to computer lab to type final draft tomorrow. Final draft of analysis due Friday, 9/19.

Thursday, September 18th:

1. Type analysis in computer lab. 2. Due tomorrow at the beginning of the period.

Friday, September 19th:

1. Turn in typed slave narrative analysis 2. SSR: Scarlet Letter (Chapters 8 -16 need to be read by 10/6) 3. SSR: Students complete various assignments with novel.

Week #5:

Monday, September 22nd:

1. Read page 102 on William Bradford and write 5 facts about him and author’s purpose. 2. Students begin reading excerpt from “Of Plymouth Plantation”, pages 104-110. 3. Finish “Of Plymouth Plantation.” 4. Discuss author’s purpose for writing, answering #8 on page 111. 5. Puritan Powerpoint through slide 8.

Tuesday, September 23rd:

1. SAT Vocab 2. Finish yesterday’s activities if needed. 3. Introduce Anne Bradstreet, page 114. 4. Read “To My Dear and Loving Husband”, page 116, and “Upon the Burning of Our House”, pages 118-119. 5. Discuss Puritan and Anne Bradstreet’s values. 6. Students answer “What Do You Value Most?”, page 121.

Wednesday, September 24th:

1. Take notes on loaded language (imagery, figures of speech, etc.) and allusions. 2. Review Jonathan Edwards on page 122, discussing fear, pity and guilt on page 123 also. 3. Students receive their own copy of “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” to highlight and annotate. Teacher gives instructions and expectations for annotations. 4. Begin listening to sermon.

Thursday, September 25th:

1. Sponge Activity: Grammar – Compound/Complex Sentences

2. Finish sermon and annotations.

3. Introduce ABC’s of the OER handout.

4. Begin answering open ended responses. Teacher and students answer #1 together and then students work alone on #2 and #3.

Friday, September 26th:

1. SSR – Scarlet Letter

2. Continue with various assignments.

Week #6:

Monday, September 29th:

1. Work on Salem Witch Trials webquest in computer lab.

Tuesday, September 30th:

1. SAT Vocab

2. Watch Salem Witch Trials video and answer questions from worksheet.

Wednesday, Oct. 1st:

1. Complete the video over The Salem Witchcraft Trials. 2. Introduce theme and the human condition with the “What Fuels a Mob?” journal entry from page 135 in the textbook; discuss. 3. Power point over drama; students take notes 4. Introduce Arthur Miller – give the students five minutes to read page 134 and write the five most interesting facts about him in their spiral; discuss. 5. Pass out study questions for The Crucible. 6. If time permits, begin listening to Act I (begins on page 137 in textbook).

Thursday, October 2nd:

1. Sponge Activity: 5 minute writing exercise with various sentence structures. 2. Begin Act I if we didn’t yesterday (137). 3. Work on the study questions while listening to the play.

Friday, October 3rd:

1. SSR: Scarlet Letter

2. Must have Chapters 8 through 16 read by Monday – QUIZ!

Week #7:

Monday, October 6th:

1. Quiz over Chapters 8 – 16 (Scarlet Letter). 2. Begin Act II (164 – 178). 3. Vocab quiz tomorrow

Tuesday, October 7th:

1. SAT Vocabulary Quiz

2. Complete Act II and study guide questions.

Wednesday, October 8th:

1. Take quiz over Act 1 and Act II.

2. Begin Act III.

Thursday, October 9th:

1. Sponge Activity: Capitalization

2. Continue with Act III.

3. When we get to page 191 at the top, students will do “reader’s theater,” which means they will get a part and read out loud. As we read out loud, discuss the prosody (vocal intonation and meter of spoken language) and dramatic monologue; use John Proctor’s speech on page 193.

4. Continue working on the study questions.

Friday, October 10th:

1. SSR Scarlet Letter

2. Continue with various assignments.

Week #8:

Monday, October 13th (Early Release Day):

1. Begin Act IV

Tuesday, October 14th:

1. SAT Vocabulary.

2. Finish Act IV.

3. Get with four or five people. 4. Rewrite part of an act from The Crucible in a modern language that reveals themes and characteristics of drama. 5. Act this scene out for the class on Thursday.

Wednesday, October 15th: 1. Journal: What modern day witch hunts are relative to today? Think about politics, celebrities and diversity.

2. Continue working in groups on rewrite.

Thursday, October 16th:

1. Present rewrite of The Crucible to class.

Friday, October 18th:

1. SSR – Scarlet Letter

2. Continue with assignments.

Week #9

Monday, October 20th:

1. Start The Crucible movie.

Tuesday, October 21st:

1. Continue with movie

Wednesday – Oct. 22nd:

1. Finish the movie.

2. Introduce The Crucible essay per instructions on handout.

Thursday, Oct. 23rd:

1. Continue writing rough draft.
