PIETILA, PASTOR OF CENTRAL 14 UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN FLORENCE, SOUTH 15 CAROLINA UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT 16 AND TO WISH HIM MANY MORE YEARS OF GOOD 17 HEALTH AND HAPPINESS AND CONTINUED SERVICE TO 18 THE PEOPLE OF HIS COMMUNITY AND STATE. 19 20 Whereas, the members of the Senate note that the Reverend 21 Thomas C. Pietila, Pastor of Central United Methodist Church in 22 Florence, S.C., is retiring after thirty-four years of pastoral care as 23 a United Methodist minister; and 24 25 Whereas, born in Painesville, Ohio, Reverend Pietila received his 26 B.A. degree from Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio in 1974 and his 27 Master of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School in 1976; and 28 29 Whereas, during his career he has pastored the Laurens Road 30 United Methodist Church in Greenville from 1979-1983, the 31 Socastee United Methodist Church in Myrtle Beach from 1983- 32 1991, the Lee Road United Methodist Church in Taylors from 33 1991-1995, the Woodland United Methodist Church in Rock Hill 34 from 1995-1999, and took up his current pastorate at Central 35 United Methodist Church in Florence in 1999; and 36 37 Whereas, he has been a member of the South Carolina Annual 38 Conference since 1977, and he currently serves on the Conference 39 Board of Ordained Ministry, the Duke Divinity School Alumni 40 Council, and the McLeod Hospice Advisory Board; and 41
[1469] 2 1 Whereas, other agencies and boards he has served on include the 2 Board of Trustees for Epworth Children’s Home, CHOICES 3 Charter School Board, Habitat for Humanity, United Way, 4 Lighthouse Ministries Board, and the Mayor’s Faith and School 5 Coalition; and 6 7 Whereas, Reverend Pietila and his wife, Lindy, have been married 8 thirty-three years and have two grown children, Rebecca and 9 Caroline, and three grandsons, Thomas, Christopher, and Caden; 10 and 11 12 Whereas, in his free time Reverend Pietila enjoys fly fishing, 13 reading, and kayaking; and 14 15 Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the Senate to pause 16 in their deliberations so that they might congratulate this 17 distinguished man on the occasion of his retirement and express 18 their appreciation for his work in a high and difficult calling. 19 Now, therefore, 20 21 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 22 concurring: 23 24 That the members of the Senate express congratulations and best 25 wishes to the Reverend Thomas C. Pietila, Pastor of Central 26 United Methodist Church in Florence, S.C. on the occasion of his 27 retirement and wish him many more years of good health and 28 happiness and continued service to the people of his community 29 and State. 30 31 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 32 Reverend Thomas C.
