Choose two questions from each level. Answer each question using details and examples from the story.
Level 1
What word did Mrs. Hockaday use to describe Lucas’s behavior? Who was the brain that sat next to Lucas? What did Lucas bring to class that caused Mrs. Hockaday to get angry? What part did Lucas play in the class circus?
Level 2
Explain what Lucas did to his desk. Describe what happened during the school assembly. Describe what happened when Mrs. Cott took the children for a haircut. Explain how Mrs. Hockaday felt about Lucas at the end of the school year.
Level 3
Do you know anyone who is a “class clown”? Describe this person. What would you do if you saw Lucas writing his name into the desk? What problems can a class clown cause? Name them. How would your teacher react to Lucas?
Level 4
Compare Lucas to a class clown that you know. Compare Mrs. Hockaday to a teacher you know. Why does Lucas always fool around in school? Name the event in the story which really shows Lucas’s personality.
Level 5
Suppose Lucas’s teacher was the meanest teacher in the word- what might happen? Think of other things Lucas could do as class clown. Suppose you were Lucas – explain to your mother exactly why you fool around so much. Describe a “class clown” in your own words.
