CHILL TIE DEPARTMENTS (It is suggested that you copy these directions on colored cardstock, and then laminate them before placing them in the appropriate work area.)
DELIVERY DEPARTMENT: Many office and companies hire a special delivery service (runners) to move important documents or products from one work place to another. Be ready to go at any time. Make your deliveries as quickly and quietly as possible. Make sure you clarify which new department the item should be delivered to. Good luck!!! ______PROCEDURE: 1. Stay in your work area until you have a delivery to make. 2. Before accepting a delivery, make sure you know which department it is to go to. 3. Make the delivery and return to your station. 4. You will need to move quickly and quietly to efficiently handle this job. 5. At the end of your shift, make sure your department is clean and orderly. MARKETING DEPARTMENT: You will be responsible for choosing the most marketable fabrics for chill ties, deciding a company name, a company logo, advertising, product instructions, and selling the product. It is very important that the Marketing Department work as a team to accomplish all tasks listed below. You will need to divide jobs in order to complete all parts of this assignment. You have two computers for your use and various materials in your department. Your teacher will supply any other materials that you need. ______PROCEDURE: 1. Choose 20 pieces of fabric that your department feels will be the most marketable for chill ties. 2. Have the Delivery Department take this fabric to the Tracing Department. 3. Choose a name for the student company producing the chill ties. 4. Design a LOGO for the student company. 5. Decide on advertising and promotion for the chill ties. How will you advertise? Where will you advertise? What type of advertisements do you want to use (flyers, posters, announcements, etc.)? 6. Decide who the target customer is. 7. Complete two types of advertisements. 8. Write and print the instructions for the care of the chill tie. Please include the following safety warning: “For safety reasons, DO NOT tie chill tie in a double knot! Chill ties SHOULD NOT be used by children 4 years of age and younger.” 9. Decide where you will sell the chill ties. 10.Decide how you will sell the chill ties. TRACING DEPARTMENT: It will be your responsibility to trace the chill tie pattern onto each piece of fabric. When the chill tie comes to you the second time, you will mark the first chalk line for the Sewing Department. When the chill tie returns the third time, the crystals will already be in it and you will mark the second stitch line. ______PROCEDURE 1: 1. Place the pattern on the fold of the fabric. Using a chalk wheel, trace around the two sides of the pattern. The top part will not be traced because it is on the fold. 2. Call the Delivery Department and route the chill tie to the Cutting Department.
PROCEDURE 2: 1. When the partially completed chill tie comes to your department, measure 10 inches from the point furthest from the opening. Draw a chalk line across the chill tie at this point. 2. Call the Delivery Department and send the chill tie to the Sewing Department.
PROCEDURE 3: 1. When the chill tie comes back to you for a third time, measure from the other point 10 inches and draw a chalk line. 2. Call the Delivery Department and send the chill tie back to the Sewing Department for the final stitch line. 3. Keep your department neat and organized.
CUTTING DEPARTMENT: It will be your responsibility to cut out all of the chill ties. You will also need to trim and save fabric scraps. ______PROCEDURE: 1. Using the sheers, cut out the chill tie following the chalk line. Be sure you do not cut along the fold. 2. Call the Delivery Department and send the chill tie to the Pressing Department. 3. Trim off the string ends of the fabric that is left. Throw the string ends away and put the small end scraps in the scrap basket for future use. 4. Keep your work area neat and organized. PRESSING DEPARTMENT: It will be your responsibility to press the chill tie fabric before it is sewn, after it is sewn, and when the product is completed—a total of three times. ______BEGINNING PROCEDURE: 1. Press the chill tie fabric (right sides in) the length of the fabric. 2. Call the Delivery Department and send the chill tie to the Sewing Department. INTERMEDIATE PROCEDURE: 1. Carefully press the sewn chill tie so the seam edge is all the way to the outer edge of the fabric. 2. Call the Delivery Department and send the chill tie to the Tracing Department. FINAL PROCEDURE: 1. Carefully press the completed chill tie. 2. Call the Delivery Department and send the completed project to the Packaging Department. ADDITIONAL DUTIES: 1. Fill the iron with distilled water. 2. Unplug the iron at the end of your work shift. 3. Straighten your work area. SEWING DEPARTMENT: It will be your responsibility to sew all chill ties. ______PROCEDURE 1: 1. Wind a bobbin with thread to match the chill tie. Thread the machine. 2. Starting at the folded edge, sew a ¼-inch seam from the point at the folded edge around the curve. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the sewing. 3. Skip a space of two inches. Continue to sew to the other end, around the curve and to the folded edge point. Be sure to back stitch when you start and when you end this stitching line. 4. Call the Delivery Department and have them take the chill tie to the Quality Control Department. PROCEDURE 2: 1. Sew the control line across the chill tie at the 10-inch marking. Be sure this marking line is the furthest from the crystal opening. Be sure to backstitch when you start to sew this line and at the end of the line. 2. Call the Delivery Department and send the chill tie to the Crystal Department. PROCEDURE 3: 1. Sew the second control line across the last 10-inch marking. Be sure the crystals are in the end part of the chill tie. Backstitch at the beginning and the end of this stitching line. 2. Send the chill tie to the Hand Sewing Department. NOTE: When you start a new chill tie, get matching thread and move to a new machine. Leave the machine threaded in case you or another sewer needs this color of thread again. QUALITY CONTROL DEPARTMENT: It will be your responsibility to check all chill ties during the production process to make sure they meet company standards. ______PROCEDURE for 1st check: 1. Check the chill ties after the sewing process. Make sure there is at least a ¼-inch seam allowance the entire length of the chill tie. Check both sides carefully. 2. Check the stitch line at both points to make sure the stitch goes all the way to the fold. 3. Check the chill tie to be sure there is a backstitch at the 4 necessary places (beginning, stop for opening, end of opening, and end of stitching line). 4. If you find any problems, call the Delivery Department and send the chill tie back to the Sewing Department with a sticky note about the needed changes. 5. If the chill tie meets the company standards, call the Delivery Department and route the chill tie to the Turning Department. PROCEDURE for 2nd check: 1. Make sure the chill tie is pressed correctly. If it needs to be pressed again then call the Delivery Department and route the chill tie back to the Pressing Department. 2. If the chill tie meets set company standards, call the Delivery Department and route the chill tie to the Marking Department. PEOCEDURE for 3rd check: 1. Check the final product to see if it meets company standards. 2. Products that meet company standards should be sent to the Packaging Department via the Delivery Department. 3. Any product that needs to be changed or repaired should be routed back to the appropriate department with a note of instructions. Be sure to send it through the Delivery Department. REMEMBER . . . we have the highest of standards at our company! Thank you for helping us continue our program of excellence. TURNING DEPARTMENT: It will be your responsibility to turn all chill ties right-side-out. ______PROCEDURE: 1. Using a pencil to reach into the small tube, turn the chill tie right-side-out. 2. Get the two points as pointed as possible. 3. Call the Delivery Department and have the chill tie sent to the Turning Department. 4. If you find a problem with a chill tie, send it to the Quality Control Department, with a short note of explanation, using the Delivery Department.
POINT DEPARTMENT: It will be your responsibility to pull both chill tie points out to make a sharp, attractive point on both ends of the tie. ______PROCEDURE: 1. Using a large quilting needle, pull each of the chill tie ends out to an attractive point. 2. Call the Delivery Department and have them deliver the chill tie to the Pressing Department. 3. If there is a problem with a tie, please have it sent to the Quality Control Department, with a brief note about the problem, using the Delivery Department.
CRYSTAL DEPARTMENT: It will be your responsibility to put crystals in each chill tie. ______PROCEDURE: 1. Check the chill tie to be sure that the first sewing line is in place furthest from the crystal opening. 2. Using the funnel, put precisely 1 teaspoon of crystals in the chill tie opening. Shake the crystals down to the control stitch line. 3. Call the Delivery Department and route the chill tie to the Tracing Department for the second 10-inch marking. 4. Keep your work area clean and organized. HAND-SEWING DEPARTMENT: It will be your responsibility to close each opening with a neat hand stitch. ______PROCEDURE: 1. Thread a needle with a two-foot thread that matches the chill tie. 2. Double the thread and tie a secure knot at the end of the thread. 3. Hide the knot in the seam, then using the hidden stitch, close the small opening. 4. Tie off the knot and hide the knot in the seam. 5. Call the Delivery Department and send the completed chill tie back to the Pressing Department.
PACKAGING DEPARTMENT: It will be your responsibility to design and produce a package for each chill tie. ______PROCEDURE: 1. Using the materials in your department, design a simple package for the chill ties. If you need other materials for this job, please let your teacher know. 2. Make one package for each of the chill ties. 3. Put each completed chill tie in a package. 4. Put a direction sheet in the package with each chill tie.
