Organization Grant Project Description Awards

SIOUX CITY SCHOOLS – PUBLIC Bryant Elementary School (Tina Cobbs) $552 Funding for one year subscription to www.thedailycafe.com for K-5 classrooms (463 students). The Daily 5 and CAFÉ management system is a structure that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence.

Clark Elementary School (Jennifer Koch) $500 For the purchase of portable CD players with headphones as well as a library of books on CD to enhance “listening to reading” in the kindergarten classroom and allow 24 students to independently listen to a variety of text during the Daily 5 portion of the day.

Hunt Elementary School (Nakeata Divis) $470 For the purchase of an Apple iPad 2, cover, and stylus to enhance the academic growth of the school’s 95 ESL students. The iPad will be used as a supplemental tool in the ESL classroom and will allow a student who is struggling with a concept to be provided with meaningful extended instruction.

Hunt Elementary School (Courtney Jungers) $484 Funding for the purchase of CD collection, alphabet books, letter of the day pocket chart, phonemic games, activity mats, etc. to help provide opportunities and resources for the growth socially of kindergarten students while being exposed to writer’s workshop, fine motor skills, name recognition, phonemic awareness skills through nursery rhymes, alphabet letter recognition, and sounds.

Hunt Elementary School (Maggie Meier) $311 Toward the purchase of graphing pocket charts, learning mats, puzzles, flip charts, etc. in order to build a strong math base for 19 kindergarten students to recognize, count, and show different ways to write numbers as well as understand “less than, greater than, and equal groups”.

Irving Elementary School (Amy Rojas) $400 Funding for the purchase an iPad for special education resource room (currently serving 17 students) in order to provide additional practice through specific apps in the core areas of reading and math.

Leeds Elementary School (Erin Michael) $447 Kindergarten teacher will use funds to purchase 3 Nook Colors for classroom of 22 students. Teacher will purchase apps or download free apps to assist students in recognizing alphabet letters and sounds.

Nodland Elementary School (Alison Rininger) $500 First grade teacher will use funds to purchase audio books and corresponding literature to enhance 25 students’ fluency and love of reading through listening to fluent models.

Spalding Park Elementary School (Molly Pendergast) $500 Funding toward the purchase of take home books. Three Title 1 instructors will provide a set of take home books (4 books per student) for 30 Reading Recovery students which will be given to them at the end of the school year. This will allow families to have access to high interest books for their children to read aloud to them over the summer. Organization Grant Project Description Awards

Unity Elementary School (Jade Manker) $500 Project involves making jigs that will teach and strengthen math, reading, and fine motor skills in the Early Childhood Special Education class which currently has 19 students ranging in age from 3-5 years old. Funding to purchase alphabet & number manipulatives.

Unity Elementary School (Stephanie White) $489 . Funding to purchase magnet word tiles, magnetic letters, letter stamps, word games, etc. that will be used to increase the reading and writing fluency of 39 students through repeated exposure of engaging practice activities with High Frequency words.

SOUTH SIOUX CITY SCHOOLS – PUBLIC

Harney Elementary School (Robin Jager) $500 Two Title 1 instructors will use funding to purchase 8 take home books for each of the 18 Reading Recovery students in 1st grade, given at the end of the school year. Project will allow families to have access to high interest books for their children to read aloud to them over the summer.

SOUTH SIOUX CITY SCHOOLS – PAROCHIAL

St. Michael’s School (Donna Bishop, Principal) $600 A Band Program will be offered for the first time in the school’s 62 years of existence. With this Fine Arts Enhancement Project, students will receive individual lesson instruction before and after school with full group instruction the last period of the school day if a 2.0 GPA is maintained in the classroom. School serves 172 preschool – 8th grade students. Funding to purchase 4 condenser microphones for the stage and auditorium.
