GUIDANCE MATTERS 2010 – 2011

Camp College will take place again this year on the campuses of Monmouth University and Brookdale Community College on July 19 & 20. Camp College is a two-day program for rising high school seniors who lack the resources they might need to find the best college matches and successfully complete the application process. This includes students who are low-income and/or have parents who did not attend college. See the brochure in your Team office for more information about the program.

SPRING 2011 – NEW JERSEY NATIONAL COLLEGE FAIR – will be held at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center, 97 Sunfield Avenue, Raritan Center, Edison, NJ on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 from 9 am to 12 pm and 6 pm to 8:30 pm and Thursday, April 17th between 9 am and noon.

ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS AND SENIORS!! The High School Academic Support Program will be 50 Hayes Street, Newark for high school juniors and seniors. SAT Math Preparation (5-6 pm) Critical Reading/Essay Writing (6-7pm) and Assistance with completing college/scholarship applications, FAFSA, personal statements, (7- 7:30 pm conducting SAT Prep Sessions on Wednesdays, from now until May 4th from 5-7:30 pm at the Springfield Branch Library,)

AWARDS

 2 nd Annual Sustainability Essay Contest – the purpose of this contest is to stimulate interest in sustainability in general and in the new Center for Sustainability Studies and B.S. degree in Sustainability Science at Kean University. See details in your Guidance office or the Guidance Center. Entries muyst be transmitted electronically by Friday, April 1, 2011

 The Claudia Ann Seaman Award for Young Writers was created by the Seaman family in memory of their daughter and sister, a young poet. In 2011, the CAS Award acknowledges excellence in teen writing in poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction. The competition is open to all students in grades 9 – 12, each participant may submit a total of three poems, essays or stories (1500 word limit for fiction and creative nonfiction)The award is $200 for each genre and the deadline for submission is April 15, 2011.  Tekmark Global Solutions, LLC will be offering two $1,500 scholarships to high school seniors MONTCLAIR HIGH SCHOOL

GUIDANCE MATTERS 2010 – 2011 That plan on attending Rutgers University or Rider University who intend to major in Engineering/Engineering Technology, Computer Science/MIS or Telecommunications/Information Technology.  The Jon M. Pritsch Scholarship is being offered to a high school student who is on their high school golf team, plans to pursue a career in a golf-related field and will be attending an accredited undergraduate college or university in the fall. The application can be picked up in the Guidance Center or from your Team office. The deadline is May 25, 2011.

 The Institute of Culinary Education announces the formation of the ICE Kevin Nurse Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to one student annually who has overcome medical hardship and demonstrated enthusiasm for food and culinary education. $10,000 is awarded as tuition discount for students enrolling in ICE’s Culinary Arts of Pastry & Baking Programs or a $5,000 scholarship if enrolling is ICE’s Culinary Management or Hospitality Management Programs.  The Jewish Vocational Service administers a Scholarship Loan Program for Jewish residents. Annual interest-free loans of up to $5,000may be granted to eligible candidates. Please contact Lynne Robbins at 973-674-6630 xz:272 or email [email protected] . Deadline is May 13, 2011.

 Patricia Spikes Scholarship is open to African-American high school seniors with a 3.0 or higher GPA. Details and application forms are in your Team office and the Guidance Center. The `application deadline is May 1, 2011.

 Healthy Lifestyles Scholarship – This $5,000 scholarship is open to students currently enrolled as high school or first-year college students. To be eligible for this award you must be under 25 and answer both of the essay questions. Deadline: April 30, 2011.  Dial My Dentist Scholarship Program - $1,000 scholarship is available to students between the ages of 16 and 21. In the fall of this year (Sept. 2011) the student must be attending college or university full-time. Deadline: May 6, 2011. Go to website- MONTCLAIR HIGH SCHOOL

Big Dig Scholarship – This scholarship for $3,000 is for students who submit an essay that is under 1,000 words and are currently in high school or in their first two years of college/university.  2011 ICBC Scholarship - $1,000 scholarship is open to students that are between the ages of 17- 21 that are residents of the US or Canada. A student can be enrolled or intending on enrolling in any course of study in the fall semester of 2011. Deadline: June 15, 2011.  Berkeley College is offering DECA scholarships for qualified students in the amount of up to $6,000 which may be renewable on an annual basis.  PATRIOT’S PATH COUNCIL – BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA is offering two (2) scholarships for students in New Jersey. The Frank D. Visceglia Memorial Scholarship (applicant must be an Eagle Scout) The Bruce A. Black Memorial Scholarship (applicant must be an Eagle Scout) Applications and details can be found at the council website: ppbsa.org.

 The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Omicron Xi Omega Chapter , a college women’s service organization, invites college-bound African American female students to apply for their 2011 Scholarship Award. Priority will be given to Montclair students. The Scholarship will be awarded in three categories:

Partnership in Mathematics and Science (PIMS) Scholarship Historical Black College/University Scholarship Community Service Scholarship. MONTCLAIR HIGH SCHOOL

GUIDANCE MATTERS 2010 – 2011 The deadline for application submission is April 11, 2011. Applications can be picked up in Team offices and the Guidance Center.

The Montclair Scholarship Fund is once again offering need-based scholarships to graduating seniors. Applications will be available on February 1, 2011 in the Guidance Center or from your Counselor. The application deadline is March 16, 2011. More information about the MSF Scholarships can be found on the Montclair Board of Education website, http://www.montclair.k12.nj.us.

 High School Seniors are invited to enter the Verizon Wireless/UNCF Black History Month Essay Contest. Submit an essay about how the evolution of wireless technology has changed the world for a chance to win up to $5,000 toward college tuition. For details, go to uncf.org.

 Gary W. Schultz Scholarship Fund is accepting applications from seniors who demonstrate not only academic achievement, but also a strong commitment to community service. Successful candidates may have overcome personal and/or physical obstacles in order to achieve his or her goals and objectives and must demonstrate how the scholarship will make a financial difference in her or her academic future. Applications can be found in the file box outside of the Guidance Center. The due date for applications is noon, April 12, 2011.

 Katherine Marcotte Scholarship is awarded by the Montclair Education Association to a graduating MHS Senior who has shown an interest in pursuing a career in the field of education. The application can be picked up in the Guidance Center or your Team Office. The application deadline is April 30, 2011.

 The Hickory Tree Chorus, Sweet Adelines International is pleased to offer its annual $1,000 Scholarship to a young woman graduate who intends to pursue a career in music. This scholarship will be given to a student selected on the basis of her application and her vocal musical talent. Applications are available in the Guidance Center and in Team offices. Each student should complete the application and submit a CD which should include at least two (2) Vocal performances, demonstrating her particular talent. Both application and CD should be received by April 24, 2011.

 The Educational Test Services Employees’ Community Action Fund, Scholarship and Recognition Programs is pleased to announce its Scholarship Program (ECAF). The Scholarship is being offered to high school seniors in the state of NJ. Recipients will receive awards valued up to $5,000 and can pursue a vocational/technical career or a 2 or 4 year degree from any accredited schools/colleges/universities in the US. GUIDANCE MATTERS 2010 – 2011  Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded by the NJ Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Foundation. Detains can be found on the application form. The deadline is April 15, 2011.

 The Foster and Adoptive Family Services (FAFS) is proud to offer scholarships and grants for the 2011 academic year. They are available to foster/adopted high school seniors who are or have been under the care of the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS). All applications must be returned no later than March 18, 2011. Go to your Team office of the Guidance Center for applications.

 The Helen Hansen Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, sponsored by Union-Essex Legal Professionals Association, is now available to any student who is a resident of Union County or Essex County and is graduating from high school, is graduating from high school or already enrolled in college and is a Legal Secretarial student, Criminal Justice or Law major. Go to your Team or Guidance Office for applications.

 The Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of New Jersey is allowing MHS to nominate ONE student for a $1,500 scholarship consideration. Eligible candidates are high school seniors seeking to pursue a career related to US History. Financial need is NOT a factor. Successful candidates will be in the top 25% of their senior class or have SAT I scores at above the 75th percentile. Recipients must enter a 4- year college in New Jersey.

 Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation of New Jersey is sponsoring Tzu Chi Scholars 2010. All graduating seniors are encouraged to apply. Scholars will be selected based on financial need, academic achievement and community involvement. Applications can be downloaded from www.us.tzuchi.org. The postmark deadline for this $1, 000. Award is March 19, 2011.

 NJUA – New Jersey Utilities Association awards a scholarship to a 3 qualified minority, female and/or disabled student who will be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university. Applications are available on line at www.njua.com. Must be postmarked no later than April 1, 2011. The scholarship award is valued at $1,500. per academic year.

 NAWC – National Association of Water Companies New Jersey Chapter – Scholarship for students interested in the water utility industry or in any related field. Applications is available on line at www.nawc.org/njschol.pdf . The application must be postmarked no later than April 1, 2011.

 The Nora C. Iroka Scholarship Fund for students who want to pursue a career in any area of the fashion industry. Applications and information are available in the Guidance Center. All applications must be received by mail on or before April 21, 2011. MONTCLAIR HIGH SCHOOL

GUIDANCE MATTERS 2010 – 2011  The Peacemaker Scholarship Awards, given by BlueWaveNJ and North Jersey Ceasefire are awarded to seniors whose careers at MHS have been marked by outstanding dedication to the prevention of violence. All seniors in good standing are eligible. The essay contest if a written description of what you have done to promote non-violence, bullying reduction or peacemaking activities at MHS or throughout the Montclair community. The $1,000 Blanche Spruill Memorial Scholarship, given in memory of Ernie Spruill, who was killed during the Watchung Post Office Massacre, is awarded to further a student’s development as a leader and conciliator. In addition, two Peacemaker Scholarship Awards of $500 each will be awarded to recognize the impressive dedication of students who have incorporated the mission of antiviolence into their everyday lives. All essays should be written in 550 words or less. Due date for the above is April 1, 2011. They can be turned in to the Team 3 office to Mr. Evangelista.

 The Marine Trades Association of New Jersey (MTA/NJ) is pleased to announce the availability of two Education Scholarships for the 2011-2012 school year. The scholarship is open to any student who is interested in pursuing a career in the boating industry and meets the criteria outlined. The following is an overview of the scholarships: . MTA/NJ Education Scholarship: This scholarship has a value of $1,500 that can be applied to any marine trades program at any school.

. Automotive Training Center: This is a half scholarship ($9,000) for the Marine Service Technology Program at the Automotive Training Center in Pennsylvania. Contact the website for the application and more information. www.mtanj.org. . Due date for the above is April 1, 2011

The New Jersey Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Association, Inc. is pleased to sponsor a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to be awarded to a graduating senior in the class of 2011 who has ME/CFS. The scholarship is available by download at their website: http://njcfsa.org. the Application deadline is April 15, 2011, with notification by May 16. All applications should be forwarded to New Jersey CFS Association, Scholarship Committee, P.O.Box 328, Port Republic, NJ 08241.

 The Vivian Gaunt African American Heritage Scholarship Fund, Inc. will be awarding four (4) scholarships to two male and two female students of African descent, with GPS’s of 2.0-2.9 only, to continue his/her academic and personal development beyond the secondary level. Applications can be picked up in the Guidance Center and must be received by the African Heritage Scholarship Fund by Friday, April 1, 2011.

 New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) has both scholarships and Book Awards for Seniors and Juniors. Examples of scholarships/contests they offer are: Technology Essay Contest, Interior Design Technology Essay Contest, Architectural Building and Engineering Technology Design Contest, Automotive Technology Essay Contest, Computer Aided Design-Mechanical Technology Contest. GUIDANCE MATTERS 2010 – 2011  THE NEW JERSEY BURGLAR & FIRE ALARM ASSOCIATION (NJBFAA) is offering scholarship opportunities from $1,500 (local)-$7,500 (national level) to the high school seniors who are sons and daughters of active-duty police & fire personnel. All applicants must submit a completed application with supporting details postmarked by March 15, 2011.

 The Essex County School Nurses Association is sponsoring two scholarships, each valued at $250.00, for two graduating high school seniors who have been accepted into a four year nursing program. The application must be received no later than April 8, 2011. See your counselor for more information.

 The Meyerhoff Scholars Program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, is open to all high achieving high school seniors who plan to pursue undergraduate studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Mathematics. Go to http://www.umbc.edu/meyerhoff/ for more information.

 The purpose of the Seventy-fourth edition of The American League, High School Oratorical Scholarship Program “A Constitutional Speech Contest” sponsored by The American Legion, is to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of the Constitution of the United States. Other objectives to be gained are those of leadership, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparations for the acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American Citizenship.  New Jersey Schoolwomen’s Club Scholarships are available for future teachers! The Jeanette Hodge and Patricia Barber Scholarships, each in the amount of $1,000, and 2 Educational Awards in the amount of $500, will be awarded for academic achievement. Involvement in extra-curricular and community service activities will also be considered. Applications must be postmarked on or before April 16, 2011 and finalists will be interviewed on Saturday, April 16th. Recipients will be notified by May 4th. There will be copies of the Application Form in the Guidance Center.

 The National Council of Jewish Women will once again be awarding the Nancy & Robert Eskow NCJW Volunteer Award, recognizing community service and/or advocacy. This is a non-sectarian award and students of all faiths are encouraged to apply. The deadline for submission is Friday, April 1, 2011. Go to the Guidance Center for Instructions.

 The NJ Sharing Network Foundation in cooperation with Donate Life New Jersey and Gift of Life Donor Program is pleased to announce the availability of a Benjamin R. Chirls Scholarship in the amount of $3,000 ($1,500 per semester) for the 2011-2012 academic year. The scholarship recipient must be an organ, tissue or eye donor, transplant recipient, donor family member or awareness advocate. The application must be received by May 26, 2011. GUIDANCE MATTERS 2010 – 2011  The 2011 Roland Meyer Orpheus Club Scholarship is now available. The award is $2,000 and was established to recognize and assist outstanding high school students who intend to pursue the study of music at an institution of higher education.  The Asian Pacific Islanders for Professional and Community advancement of AT&T will be awarding five $1,800 Samsung/APCA and four $1,500 APCA scholarships to college-bound high school students.  The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is pleased to offer two (2) $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who intend to pursue a college career in Civil Engineering.  The American Association of Blacks in Energy Scholarship Program seeks to help increase the number of African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans in energy-related fields. The application can be found in the Guidance Center or with your Guidance Counselor, and must be postmarked no later than March 11, 2011.

 FREE SAT/ACT Combination Practice Test at MHS – Sat. March 12 @8:30 AM All students will receive a full student score report with individual analysis about one week following the practice tests. Contact the above website for information.

INTERNSHIPS

 CBCF Congressions Internship Program will be running again this summer.

 The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is pleased to announce that applications for our 2011 Summer Youth Internship Program are currently available This is a six-week program held between June 27 and August 5, 2011 for students completing their Junior year by June 2011. Applications can be picked up in the Guidance Center or from your Guidance Counselor. The deadline for applications is March 7, 2011. Incomplete or faxed applications will not be considered.
