This is a list of braille books produced or purchased by the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library in 2008. Book listings are arranged by audience and include a brief description of the book’s content. Some of these titles are available in web- braille on our website.

These titles were selected for production or purchase based on patron requests and to supplement underrepresented areas in the existing collection. You will find that many of the books are by local authors or are set in the Pacific Northwest.

Production of these books would not have been possible without the contribution of many hours of transcribing and proofreading by our talented volunteers.

Blown Away [#6, Frank Corso mysteries] BRW 1245 by G. M Ford 4 volumes On the road to investigate an unsolved bombing case involving a possible suicide bomber, writer Frank Corso uncovers the possibility that the supposed bomber may have been a victim himself, forced to strap explosives on by a cruel mastermind. Some violence. 2006.

Dead Wrong [#12, Joanna Brady mysteries] BRW 1190 by J. A. Jance 5 volumes Mystery. Pregnant Cochise County, Arizona, sheriff Joanna Brady handles two tough cases: A border patrol officer finds the mutilated body of Brad Evans, an ex-con convicted of killing his wife, whose remains were never found. Also, an animal control officer is brutally beaten while on a stakeout. Some strong language. 2006.

Web of Evil [#2, Ali Reynolds mysteries] BRW 1242 by J. A. Jance 6 volumes When her husband, Paul Grayson, is murdered on the eve of their divorce, former anchorwoman Ali Reynolds, from Edge of Evil (BRW 1150), becomes the main suspect. Ali, her son Chris, and her high school friend Dave Holman, now a homicide detective, investigate. Some violence and some strong language. Bestseller. 2007. The Last Town on Earth BRW 1238 by Thomas Mullen 7 volumes Washington State, 1918. A small mill town votes to quarantine itself against the virulent influenza epidemic. Philip Worthy, the 16-year-old adopted son of the town’s founder, is one of the citizens posted to enforce the quarantine. When a cold, hungry, and possibly sick soldier begs him for entry into the town, Philip makes a life-changing decision. 2006.

Urban Shaman [#1, the Walker Papers] BRW 1246 by C.E. Murphy 5 volumes Skeptical Seattle cop Joanne Walker comes to the aid of a woman claiming to be hunted by Cernunnos, an ancient Celtic god. After a confrontation with Cernunnos, Joanne has three days to harness her newly awakened shamanic powers and save the world. Some strong language and some violence. 2005.

Thunderbird Falls [#2, the Walker Papers] BRW 1259 by C.E. Murphy 5 volumes Seattle beat cop Joanne Walker is a reluctant shaman who saved the world three months ago. Accidentally unleashing Lower World demons while trying to save humanity, she must learn to control her powers if she is to prevent Armageddon. Sequel to Urban Shaman (BRW 1246). Some strong language. 2006.

Sweetbriar: [#1, Sweetbriar series] BRW 1237 by Brenda Wilbee 4 volumes This first book in the Sweetbriar series follows the Boren and Denny families as they journey west in 1851 and found the city of Seattle. Louisa Boren's rugged determination and deep faith leads her across the country and into the heart of David Denny. 1983.

The Legend of Spud Murphy BRW 1249 by Eoin Colfer 1 volume Two rambunctious young brothers who hate reading are forced to spend an hour each day in the local library where the ferocious librarian is said to use a potato gun to protect her books from mischievous children. Sasquatch Award nominee. Grades 2-4. 2004.

Do Princesses Really Kiss Frogs? BRC 339 by Carmela LaVigna Coyle 1 volume A young girl takes a hike with her father, asking many questions about what princesses do. Humorous story in rhyme. Print/Braille. Grades P-2. 2005.

Perro Grande ... Perro Pequeno (Big dog ... Little Dog: a bedtime story) BER 175 by P. D. Eastman 1 volume This bilingual adventure focuses on the concept of opposites. The volume contains Spanish paragraphs followed immediately by the English translation. There are two versions: the first one contains uncontracted English; the second contains contracted English. The print book is also included. Grades P-2.

Owen Foote, Mighty Scientist BRW 1250 by Stephanie Greene 1 volume The realities of owning a Uromastyx lizard dampen Owen's enthusiasm, and poor teamwork threaten the entire science project results he needs to get into Mr. Wozniak's sixth-grade class. Sasquatch Award nominee. Grades 3-6. 2004.

The Road to Paris BRW 1263 by Nikki Grimes 2 volumes Paris, a biracial eight-year-old, goes to a loving foster home while her ten-year-old brother Malcolm is sent to an institution for "incorrigible" boys. Paris must make a difficult decision when her birth mother wants to reunite the family. Some strong language. Coretta Scott King Honor Book. Sasquatch Award nominee. Grades 4-7. 2006.

Grandmother's Nursery Rhymes: Lullabies, Tongue Twisters, and Riddles from South America BRW 1265 by Nelly Palacio Jaramill 1 volume A collection of traditional South American nursery rhymes in both English and Spanish. Grades P-2. 1994.

Hannah West in the Center of the Universe BRW 1252 by Linda Johns 2 volumes This time Hannah is house sitting in the funky Fremont area of Seattle, where a dognapping ring has pet owners frightened. Grades 4-7. 2007.

Hannah West on Millionaire's Row BRW 1253 by Linda Johns 2 volumes This time Hannah and her mom are house sitting in an area of expensive homes on Seattle's Capitol Hill. Strange neighborhood break-ins, in which existing items are moved around and items are added rather than taken away, provide an intriguing new mystery for Hannah to solve. Grades 4-7. 2007.

Half and Half BRW 1251 by Lensey Namioka 2 volumes Fiona and her brother Ron have both Chinese and Scottish heritage. Ron is encouraged to participate in Scottish folk dancing because he looks the part, but Fiona, with her more Chinese features, is the one who really loves the dances. Global Reading Challenge Title. Grades 4-7. 2003.

Thin Wood Walls BRW 1166 by David Patneaude 3 volumes When the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor, Joe Hanada's father is taken away by the FBI, and eventually the family is torn from their Seattle home and sent to a relocation camp in California. Sasquatch Award nominee. Grades 5-8 and older readers. 2004.

Wolf Brother BRW 1175 by Michelle Paver 4 volumes 6,000 years in the past, 12-year-old Torak and his wolf cub guide set out on a dangerous journey to fulfill an oath the boy made to his dying father—to travel to the Mountain of the World Spirit for help to destroy a demon-possessed bear that threatens all the clans. Sasquatch Award nominee. Grades 5-8. 2004.

The Shell Princess BRW 1241 by Gwyneth Rees 1 volume With the help of Morva, the sea witch, Rani has discovered where she comes from. But when she reaches the sea volcano where she was born, there's a big surprise waiting for her! Grades 3-6. 2001.

What It Means To Be A Husky: Don James and Washington's Greatest Players BRW 1261 edited by Greg Brown 8 volumes The greatest players in the history of University of Washington football share their memories and reflections on being Huskies. Foreword by Don James. 2007.

Long Journey: Contemporary Northwest Poets BRW 1260 edited by David Biespiel 5 volumes An anthology of poems by over eighty of the Pacific Northwest's leading poets. 2006.

A Pocketful of Sound: A Quick-Start and Buyer's Guide to Accessible Book & Music Players BRW 1258 by Anna Dresner 2 volumes Describes and compares many of the most accessible players, including the Zen Stone; iPods; players running Rockbox; the Olympus DS-30, DS-40, and DS-50; the Victor Stream; the Icon; and many others. Detailed descriptions, basic instructions for use, tips for power users, and a "Would I Use It?" checklist. Also included are brief sections on the media-playing capabilities of notetakers and cell phones, information about how players organize music, links to tutorials and other resources, and sources for downloading music and books. 2008.

Fact and Fiction of Healthy Vision: Eye Care for Adults and Children BRW 1244 by Clyde K. Kitchen 5 volumes A consumer health guide to eye care written by an opthalmologist. Discusses how the eye works, common eye problems, age-related eye problems, visual aids, diabetes, and neurologic conditions affecting vision. Explains eye surgeries, enucleation, and visual aids. 2007.

Columbia Highlands: Exploring Washington's Last Frontier BRW 1247 by Craig Romano 2 volumes Explores northeastern Washington State. Includes information on the natural history, human history, current residents, and travel in the area. 2007.
