Verne Smith, Thomas, Verdin, Waldrep and Wilson 12 DDN: l:\council\bills\pt\1639sd01.doc 13 DPB: 20010919 14 SUB: Expression of grief to the State of New York and Commonwealths of 15 Pennsylvania and Virginia, due to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 16 2001 17 18 19 HST: 20 21 Body Date Action Description Com Leg Involved 22 ______23 Senate 20010919 Introduced, adopted 24 25 26 27 Versions of This Bill 28 29 30 31 32 TXT: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A SENATE RESOLUTION 10 11 EXPRESSING THE COLLECTIVE GRIEF AND ANGUISH OF 12 THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO 13 OUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS IN THE STATE OF NEW 14 YORK, IN THE COMMONWEALTHS OF PENNSYLVANIA 15 AND VIRGINIA, AND IN OTHER PARTS OF THE UNITED 16 STATES OF AMERICA, AND TO OUR ALLIES IN OTHER 17 COUNTRIES WHO SUFFERED LOSS IN THE AFTERMATH 18 OF APPALLING AIRPLANE HIJACKINGS AND ATTACKS 19 ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001, EXPRESSING THE BELIEF THAT 20 THE PERPETRATORS OF THESE TERRIBLE CRIMES 21 WHICH ARE TANTAMOUNT TO AN ACT OF WAR SHOULD 22 BE SWIFTLY BROUGHT TO JUSTICE, AND PLEDGING OUR 23 PRAYERS AND OUR PURPOSE IN SUSTAINING THE 24 STRENGTH AND SOLIDARITY OF THIS NATION, OUR 25 PRESIDENT, AND OUR LEADERS AS WE RESPOND TO 26 THIS UNPRECEDENTED ATTACK ON AMERICA. 27 28 Whereas, on September 11, 2001, thousands of innocent people 29 lost their lives and their loved ones or were injured in a shocking 30 assault on The World Trade Center and The Pentagon; and 31 32 Whereas, on the same day an airplane hijacked as a part of these 33 cowardly exercises crashed in the countryside outside Pittsburgh, 34 Pennsylvania, killing all aboard; and 35 36 Whereas, these awful losses were suffered by ordinary people as 37 they were traveling or were working in buildings which had 38 become symbols of America’s extraordinary strength; and 39 40 Whereas, millions more people in this nation, and across the 41 world, were sickened as they witnessed walls collapsing into 42 rubble and faces collapsing into horror; and

1 [788] 1 1 2 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate, on behalf of 3 the State of South Carolina, desire to acknowledge and express 4 their sorrow and that of its citizens to all those who have suffered 5 loss through the death of loved ones or injury to themselves; and 6 7 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate also believe 8 that all those who participated in or sponsored these terrible crimes 9 against humanity should be quickly brought to justice without 10 regard to region or border; and 11 12 Whereas, the Senate of this State finally desires to avow and affirm 13 its love for and belief in this country and its people and principles 14 and its confidence in our President and leaders as they guide us 15 through these dark and difficult days. Now, therefore, 16 17 Be it resolved by the Senate: 18 19 That the members of the South Carolina Senate do hereby express 20 the collective grief and anguish of the people of the State of South 21 Carolina to our friends and neighbors in the State of New York, in 22 the Commonwealths of Pennsylvania and Virginia, and in other 23 parts of the United States of America, and to our allies in other 24 countries who suffered loss in the aftermath of appalling airplane 25 hijackings and attacks on September 11, 2001, express the belief 26 that the perpetrators of those terrible crimes which are tantamount 27 to an act of war should be swiftly brought to justice, and pledge 28 our prayers and our purpose in sustaining the strength and 29 solidarity of this nation, our President, and our leaders as we 30 respond to this unprecedented attack on America. 31 32 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 33 the Honorable George W. Bush, President of the United States of 34 America; the Speaker of the United States House of 35 Representatives; the President of the United States Senate; 36 Governors of the State of New York and Commonwealths of 37 Pennsylvania and Virginia; and each member of the South 38 Carolina Congressional Delegation. 39 ----XX---- 40
