Course Goals and Importance:

This course is designed to acquaint students with the events, people, and concepts that helped construct our country. We will build upon concepts learned in 8th grade and continue on into the modern age of the United States.

This main goal of this class is to shape students into knowledgeable citizens who understand how we as a country arrived to where we are today. Studying the events and shapers of this country will help students understand the past and predict the future of the United States.

Class Rules:

 Respect others and their opinions

 Do not interrupt speakers

 Participate in discussions and activities

 Do not use electronics during class unless authorized by the teacher

 Turn work in on time

Materials needed:

Students will need standard writing utensils (pen or pencil), a 1 inch binder, and a spiral notebook. Students have the option of bringing one package of the listed materials as well: notebook paper, pens, pencils, Kleenex, map colors, or markers. Attendance Policy:

Attendance will be taken 10 minutes after the bell. However, when the bell rings the door will be closed and students must report to the tardy station.

Grading:

Grades will be based on the following criteria: Tests = 60% Daily Work = 40%. Any projects or major writing assignments will be counted as tests. Late work will only be accepted for three days after the original due date. For each day that an assignment is late, 10 points will be deducted from the grade.

Exemptions: Students will have the opportunity to exempt themselves from the semester exam under the following conditions:

Semester average of 90+: no more than 4 absences for the semester

Semester average of 80+: no more than 3 absences for the semester

Semester average of 75+: no more than 2 absences for the semester

**Students must also have no office referrals and no more than 5 tardies per semester in order to exempt.

 Unit 01: Growing Pains: Gilded Age (1877-1898)  Unit 02: Celebrate Freedom Week 2nd 6 weeks  Unit 03: Reforming America: The Progressive Era (1898-1920)  Unit 04: Emergence as a World Power: Spanish-American War and WW1 (1898-1920) 3rd 6 weeks  Unit 05: Boom Time: 1920’s America (1920-1929)  Unit 06: Economic Bust: The Great Depression (1929-1939) 4th 6 weeks  Unit 07: Total War: World War 2 (1939-1945)  Unit 08: Differing Ideologies: The Cold war (1945-1970’s) 5th 6 Weeks  Unit 09: Liberty and Justice for All: Civil Rights Movement (1945-1970’s)  Unit 10: A Growing World Presence: New National Directions (1970-1990) 6th 6weeks  Unit 11: A New Century Turns: History of Our Own Lives (1990-Present)  Unit 12: Ever Changing America: Yesterday’s Challenges and Today’s Opportunities

Further information for parents: Parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to be involved with the students schooling, and any questions or concerns can be directed toward me or the administration. This syllabus is to be sent home with the student and to be viewed by the parents/guardians.

This syllabus is to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned by the end of the first week of class. This is going to be the first grade of the six weeks. Failure to return this form signed will result in a 0!!
