The Latino Cultural Center Proudly Announces its 2012-13 Season
Dallas (June 7, 2012) – The Latino Cultural Center is proud to announce its 2012-13 season. Programming at the LCC will include several broad categories: Our annual Presenting Series featuring theater, dance and music; visual arts exhibitions in the galleries; our Target Second Saturday program, funded by Target; the LCC Lecture Series; and two mini-film festivals.
PRESENTING SERIES - The annual presenting series features artists from throughout Texas and the U.S. in music, dance and theater performances that showcase the creativity, talent and diverse heritage of Latino artists.
9/14/12 - The Presenting Series kicks off the season with a music festival featuring local band Havana NRG.
9/15/12- Mariachis will perform at the LCC in honor of the LCC'S Anniversary.
9/16/12-Little Joe y La Familia will perform in celebration of Mexican Independence Day and the Anniversary of the Latino Cultural Center's grand opening.
9/20/12-9/22/2012 - The LCC will have a one-act play festival featuring works by Cara Mía Theatre Company, Mujeres de Arcadia, and Teatro Flor Candela. Each company will perform one 45-minute play in tandem with the other companies, showcasing different approaches to theater.
9/28/12-9/29/12- Closing off September, the LCC will present The Fifth Sun from Artes de la Rosa, the Latino cultural arts organization in Fort Worth. The Fifth Sun tells the story of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador.
10/13/12 - Led by Jose Bowen, Jampact is an improvisational jazz quintet that is fearless and unbridled by tradition.
11/3/12 - The LCC will feature world-renowned Jose Limon Dance Company. 11/6/12-11/7/12 & 11/13/12-11/14/12 -The LCC will also feature a Peruvian mini-film festival in partnership with the Consul General of Peru’s Office in Dallas.
11/10/2012 - ONIX will perform Mexican and Latino American contemporary classical music.
11/15/12-11/16/12- The LCC will present the musical Adelitas, based on stories by women from the Mexican Revolution. The musical will be in Spanish, with subtitles in English.
12/16/12 - Annual Posada Festival
1/22/13-1/23/13 & 1/30/13-1/31/13 - The Latino Cultural Center will partner with the Spanish Embassy in Washington, D.C. and the Honorary Consulate of Spain in Dallas to present a series of Spanish films at the LCC.
3/24/2013- In collaboration with Texas Folklife, the LCC presents its annual Big Squeeze, a youth accordion contest.
4/6/2013- The New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving will present its Latino Connections! concert led by Dr. Sergio Espinoza with classical music from Mexico.
4/28/2013- Annual Children’s Day Festival, El Día Del Nino
EXHIBITIONS -The Latino Cultural Center will host 11 exhibitions in the 2012-13 Season.
9/13/12-10/21/12 -Sam Coronado and the People of Paper. Sam Coronado is a print maker who runs The Serie Project in Austin.
10/27/12-11/2/12 - Día De Los Muertos (or Day of the Dead) Miniweek
11/9/12-1/6/13 -Latino Artists: Highlights from the AT&T Art Collection will be on view, highlighting the work of Latino artists in AT&T's collection.
12/14/12-1/4/13 - In collaboration with AT&T's Latino in Architecture, American Institute of Architects Dallas Chapter, the LCC will showcase recent works by Texas Latino architects.
1/18/13-3/3/13 - The LCC will host the photography exhibition Timeless Mexico: The Photographs of Hugo Brehme from The Wittliff Collections at Texas State University—San Marcos.
3/15/4/26/13 - The LCC will present two exhibitions: the annual Maestros Tejanos series featuring the work of living Texas Latino artist Margarita Cabrera.The second exhibit will be the work of children’s illustrator David Diaz titled, The Many Faces of David Diaz.
5/3/13-6/30/13 - 10th annual Hecho en Dallas, or Made in Dallas. This annual juried show features the work of artists in Dallas and the North Texas region and has been a staple of the center since its opening in 2003.
7/12/13-9/1/13 - The LCC will open Clay & Sculpture: Works by Texas Latino and Hispanic Artists and will partner with the Dallas Mexican American Historical League to feature a historical exhibit on the changing nature of Mexican/Mexican-American barrios in Dallas.
LECTURE SERIES -The LCC Lecture Series will be tied to programmatic activities at the Center.
10/25/2012 - During Día de los Muertos Miniweek, the LCC will host Jonathan Weber from The Greenhill School who will give a lecture on the use and treatment of cadavers in Mexico in the early 20th Century.
11/1/2012 - Patty Harrington Delaney, Chair of the Department of Dance at Southern Methodist University, will give a lecture on the Limon Dance Company and the influences on Latino Dance companies in the United States.
1/24/2013 - Dr. Lea Ybarra a professor at The Johns Hopkins University will give a lecture on her book, Vietnam Veteranos, detailing the history of Latino Vietnam Veterans.
2/7/2013 - The author of the catalog accompanying the Timeless Mexico exhibition, Susan Tomey Frost will detail some of the methods Hugo Brehme used in developing his photographs.
3/23/2013 - UTA Professor of Art and Director of the UTA Gallery, Benito Huerta will give a lecture on the work of Margarita Cabrera. He is also an established Latino visual artist in Texas.
4/11/2013 - The LCC will welcome noted intellectual and author Richard Rodriguez to Dallas for a lecture. His book Days of Obligation: An Argument with My Mexican Father was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
6/7/2013 - The LCC will host the father of Chicano theater and the founder of Teatro Campesino, Luis Valdez at the LCC. Some of his best-known works are Zoot Suit and La Bamba.
TARGET SECOND SATURDAY - Target Second Saturday is the LCC’s monthly family day with activities for people of all ages. Activities planned for the day start at 11 a.m. with hands-on arts activities for youth; a performing arts show at noon; dance and movement classes at 1 p.m.; and a showcase of local bands and musicians at 2 p.m. The LCC galleries are also open to the public throughout the day. All Target Second Saturday events are free and open to the public. Now in its fourth year at the LCC, Target Second Saturdays are generously funded by Target.
*** About the Latino Cultural Center The Latino Cultural Center is a division of the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs. Our mission is to serve as a regional catalyst for the preservation, development, and promotion of Latino and Hispanic arts and culture. The Center's 27,000 sq. ft. facility was designed by renowned Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta and features the 300-seat Oak Farms Dairy Performance Hall, two visual arts galleries, and an outdoor plaza. The signature purple tower serves as a beacon to guide visitors to our East Dallas/ Deep Ellum location. The Latino Cultural Center is located at 2600 Live Oak, Dallas, Texas 75204.
