Metro Council Passes 2014 - 2015 Budgets After reviewing the Mayor’s proposed budget and holding budget hearings for the departme nts to explain their programs; on Thursday night (06/19), the Louisville Metro Council p assed a balanced budget totaling $688,606,800.00. The Operating Budget covers the d ay to day expenses for Metro Government in areas such as: Louisville Metro Police, Loui sville Fire and Rescue, EMS, MetroSafe, IPL and Code Enforcement activities, Metro Publ ic Works, Metro Parks and more. It passed on a vote of 19 to 6. The Capital Budget whi ch covers construction and infrastructure improvements passed by a vote of 23 to 2. Overall this budget addresses deferred maintenance issues of Metro facilities: · Over $1million for community centers · $1.7million to replace the roof and do façade work on historic Metro Hall, · $1million for repairs at the Belvedere · 14 community parks will be repaired and renovated There is also money for enhanced public safety. The budget includes funding for 96 new police officers and the creation of a Real Time Crime Center. The Center will allow analysts to view what is happening in real time with surveillance cameras throughout Metro Louisville and will give residents and visitors an added sense of security. Following the Council’s vote, both budgets were sent to Mayor Greg Fischer for his signature. Once the Mayor has signed the budgets they will be posted online at http://www.louisvilleky.gov/yourtaxdollarsatwork/.

Call for Volleyball Teams for Volleyball Classic Brightside and Coca-Cola Refreshments USA, Inc. are recruiting volleyball teams from area leagues, schools, businesses, places of worship and other organizations to compete in the 25th Annual Brightside/Coca-Cola Volleyball Classic. Close to 300 teams are expected to participate, making this one of the largest outdoor volleyball tournaments in the area. The tournament will feature a number of divisions for adults and youth at various skill levels. Teams should register by July 2nd at www.baxterjacks.com or 502-582-3530. The event is scheduled for Saturday & Sunday, July 19 & 20 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Seneca Park, www.louisvilleky.gov/MetroParks/parks/seneca/ Cannons Lane and Pee Wee Reese Road (most games will be in Seneca Park). Sand Division at Baxter Jacks, 426 Baxter Avenue. Tournament fees are $30 per player.

Old Fashioned Crescent Hill 4th of July Celebration The 2014 Crescent Hill Fourth of July Festival is on Friday, July 4 and Saturday, July 5 at the Peterson-Dumesnil House, 201 S Peterson Ave. Two days of celebration and good old- fashioned fun in the neighborhood! There will be live music and a juried art fair with over 80 artists both days. Performing acts will feature top local and regional talent with something 1 | P a g e for everyone. Musical genres will include Bluegrass, Country, Folk, Dixieland Jazz, Celtic, Singer-Songwriter, and more. The event is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (or later). Also enjoy Children's Field Games, Children's Activity Area, Food Court, FABA Beer Tent, Prize Wheel, Indoor Silent Auction for Peterson-Dumesnil House and Crescent Hill Historical Displays plus the crowd pleasing Pet Show Saturday morning. Still Time to Register for LVAA Summer Camp July Summer Camps are still available through the Louisville Visual Arts Association for ages 7-12. FREE Bats Tickets Now Available The program is once again split into two parts, with each part described below: COMMUNITY NIGHTS:  The Bats will host two community nights, providing tickets, hot dogs, and soft drinks to non-profit groups who would not be able to afford a Bats game under regular circumstances. These two nights will include 4,000 guests for each game – Tuesday, July 8 and Tuesday, July 22. Groups will contact the Bats office directly to sign up for the program and each group member will get a voucher for a ticket, hot dog, and soft drink. Examples include mentoring organizations, social service agencies, and many more. This program is not intended for individual constituent distribution. METRO COUNCIL MONDAYS:  For this program, the Bats will host groups and organizations doing the good of the community that might not fit into the category above. This includes 12,000 total ticket vouchers – without hot dogs and drinks – distributed for use on ANY of these designated Monday nights: June 16, July 7, July 21 and August 4. Groups are able to 2 | P a g e choose their own date within these Monday nights. Examples include school fundraisers, charity auctions, and several others. This program is also not intended for individual constituent distribution.

Thursday, June 26: Colts Fan Fest at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, South Lot, 2800 S. Floyd Street from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Colts Fan Fests is a free event which includes live music featuring the Hunter Smith Band, autographs from Colts players Matt Overton and Adam Vinatieri and cheerleaders, free Colts giveaways and Colts In Motion, the team’s traveling museum. Fans may also sign up for one of the Colts Official Fan Clubs, register to win Colts tickets, play on the Colts interactive inflatables and test their skills in the Play 60 Zone. Friday, June 27: Frankfort Avenue will host the FAT Friday Trolley Hop from 6:00pm- 10:30pm. Many businesses along the Avenue will host live music, offer special sales and serve refreshments. This month’s Trolley Hop is sponsored by the Louisville Water Company, so the free trolleys will run a special, extended route along Frankfort Avenue, from Cannons Lane to River Road and over to the Louisville Water Tower Festival Park. For more information visit www.fatfridayhop.org · The Louisville Water Tower Park, located at 3005 River Road, will offer free admission and guided tours of the WaterWorks Museum, kids’ experiments in the Tilford Laboratory, and photos with the mascot “Tapper” from 6:00pm-9:00pm. 3 | P a g e · The Irish Rover, 2319 Frankfort Avenue, will host traditional Irish music seisuin (informal jam session) starting 8:00pm, and Avalon Sutherland, a local dancer who has competed at the highest levels of Irish Dance, will perform and collect donations to cover her expenses for the “Take the Floor” Irish Dance Program which starts later this summer in Ireland. · The Comfy Cow, 2221 Frankfort Avenue, will host live music from the local blues duo Lazy 11 from 7:00pm-10:00pm on the porch. · Crossfit Scullhouse Indoor Rowing, 2019 Frankfort Avenue, will give away a 2 week trial gift card to anyone who stops by during the Trolley Hop. · The Wine Rack, 2632 Frankfort Avenue, will host a wine tasting and Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese sampling from 6:00pm-8:00pm. · Varanese Restaurant, 2106 Frankfort Avenue, will host drink specials and live jazz from the Jeff Sherman Trio who will be joined by very special guest Fred Hamilton, who is a guitarist and Professor of Music at the University of North Texas.

Saturday, June 28: American Printing House for the Blind Museum’s Film Festival from 12:30 – 3:00 p.m. at 1839 Frankfort Avenue. Enjoy the film Butterflies Are Free (1972) which was based on the play written by Leonard Gershe. A blind man (Edward Albert) moves into his own apartment against the wishes of his overprotective mother (Eileen Heckart, and befriends the aspiring actress who lives next door (Goldie Hawn). The summer event screens films featuring an important character who is blind, followed by discussion. Best for older children and adults. All three films include audio description. Tuesday, July 1 – Thursday, July 31: Carmichael’s Bookstore, 2720 Frankfort Avenue, will welcome Waldo to Louisville for a month long local scavenger hunt. Carmichael’s has recruited 24 locally-owned independent businesses, each of which will have a 6-inch cardboard cutout of Waldo hidden somewhere in their store. Once you find Waldo located in that business, the merchant will give out a card that reads, “I Found Waldo at ______.” Prizes and a party at our new CARMICHAEL’S KIDS will follow at the end of July. Thursday, July 3: Mayor’s Music and Art Series featuring Tyrone Cotton and his band at the Mayor’s Gallery, 4th floor of Metro Hall, 527 W. Jefferson Street. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. with music at 12:10 p.m. Grab a lunch and enjoy the comfortable seating and Louisville Water will provide Pure Tap at the performance.
