Third Grade News Week of February 16th, 2015

Spelling Spelling List (Compound Words): eyelid, birdbath, waterfall, lunchtime, hairbrush, springboard, scorekeeper, rainbow, catfish, beehive, sandbox, spaceship, applesauce, homework, crosswalk, turtleneck, keyboard, hillside, railroad, rowboat TEST FRIDAY

Reading The students will finish reading The Boxcar Children. The test on Chapters 10-13 will be on Wednesday, February 18th. The remainder of the week, students will be working on short selections to improve reading comprehension and fluency. English Students will continue learning about a strategy for writing Simple Sentences and checking them to make sure they are complete. We will be focusing on parts of speech (nouns, verbs, and adjectives), subjects and predicates, and types of sentences (statement/declarative, question/interrogative, exclamation/exclamatory, and command/imperative). Math We will continue to review addition and subtraction. We will also review multiplication facts for 0-5 & 9-12. We will be learning the multiplication facts for 6, 7, 8. Please work with your child on memorizing these multiplication facts. We will begin our unit on Money. The TEST on Money is scheduled for the first week of March.

SOL 3.8 The student will determine, by counting, the value of a collection of bills and coins whose total value is $5.00 or less, compare the value of the bills and coins, and make change. SOL 3.5 The student will recall multiplication facts through the twelves table, and the corresponding division facts. SOL 3.6 The student will represent multiplication and division, using area, set, and number line models, and create and solve problems that involve multiplication of two whole numbers, one factor 99 or less and the second factor 5 or less. Science We will finish with the unit on Matter. Study Guides for this unit were sent home in the Red Nikki Folder on February 4th. The TEST on Matter will be Thursday, February 19th. Our next unit will be on Simple Machines.

SOL 3.3 The student will investigate and understand that objects are made of materials that can be described by their physical properties. Key concepts include a) objects are made of one or more materials; b) physical properties remain the same as the material is changed in visible size; and c) visible physical changes are identified.

SOL 3.2 The student will investigate and understand simple machines and their uses. Key concepts include a) purpose and function of simple machines; b) types of simple machines; c) compound machines; and d) examples of simple and compound machines found in the school, home, and work environments. (OVER)

Social Studies We will continue with the unit on European Exploration. Our final explorer will be Christopher Newport. The TEST on Newport will be Friday, February 20th. We will have a Map Test on Explorers and Their Routes on Tuesday, February 24th. Study guides for this unit were sent home in the Red Nikki Folder on Friday, January 16th.

SOL 3.3 The student will study the exploration of the Americas by a) describing the accomplishments of Christopher Columbus, Juan Ponce de Léon, Jacques Cartier, and Christopher Newport; b) identifying reasons for exploring, the information gained, and the results from the travels.

SOL 3.5 The student will develop map skills by c) locating the countries of Spain, England, and France; d) locating the regions in the Americas explored by Christopher Columbus (San Salvador in the Bahamas), Juan Ponce de Léon (near St. Augustine, Florida), Jacques Cartier (near Quebec, Canada), and Christopher Newport (Jamestown, Virginia);

Other Information  Reminder: If we are out of school due to bad weather, scheduled tests/quizzes will be made up on the first day back to school.
