The Role of Ft. Huachuca in Grassland Protection – Sheridan Stone, Wildlife Biologist, Fort Huachuca

This presentation is focused on understanding the role the military played in opening up local grasslands for settlement, the role Ft. Huachuca plays as habitat for a range of species, and the role it is now playing in grassland protection through purchase of development rights.

You will be presented with the history of cattle ranching in the area, current practices, and how grazing, cattle raising and beef production are factored into management of the grasslands and maintaining the health of the grassland ecosystem.

Grasslands Ethnobotany – Vincent Pinto, Naturalist/Wildlife Biologist, Raven’s Way Wild Journeys Vincent will lead you through a hands-on journey into the fascinating world of Ethnobotany. Drawing upon his own experiences and that of various regional cultures (past and present), he will demonstrate how local native plants can be used to create fire, tools, rope, baskets, shelter, medicine, food, and more. Participants can also try their hand at several of these time-honored hunter-gatherer skills during a short interpretive walk. Wildlife Tracking - Vincent Pinto, Naturalist/Wildlife Biologist, Raven’s Way Wild Journeys Vincent will delve into the hidden realm of wildlife tracks and signs. During this workshop, you will learn basic tracking terminology and discover how to find, identify, and interpret a wide range of animal tracks and signs. The passage of each species presents a wonderful opportunity to read this "language of the land". Here, then, you'll enjoy a golden chance to learn about the mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates that leave their trace in every corner of our incredible Grasslands! Star Gazing - Vincent Pinto, Naturalist/Wildlife Biologist, Raven’s Way Wild Journeys The night skies of southeast Arizona are an astronomer's dream. Further, the dark viewing conditions present at Audubon's Research Ranch are truly extraordinary and promise us an amazing show. Employing a tracking telescope and the latest in technology, amateur Astronomer, Vincent, will serve as your guide through the many constellations, planets, meteors, and deep sky objects that are sure to dazzle even the most seasoned observer. Vincent will also weave in the time-honored myths associated with some constellations and stars. Pull up a chair and bring your binoculars as you don't want to miss this celestial treat!
