ABELL ATHLETIC PACKET

2015

COACHING PHILOSOPHY:

Our coaching philosophy at Abell Jr. High is that we believe in teaching the whole child. We see our coaching staff as teachers and our athletes as students. We want athletics to be a great learning experience. We feel every practice and every game provide an opportunity to learn a sport and also learn life lessons. We want our athletes to learn how to be leaders. We want our athletes to lead by example. We feel athletics class provides the opportunity for athletes to learn how to be on time, tough, disciplined, committed, loyal and responsible as they are having fun playing sports.

Here at Abell Jr. High we take a tremendous amount of pride in our Athletic Program. We have a very proud and successful tradition in athletics.

We are “little” Midland Lee Rebels and our program is built on the standards set by Lee High School.

Being an athlete at Abell is a privilege not a right.

In order to have this privilege athletes must follow the rules and procedures set by our administration and coaches.

This athletic packet is to provide all the information rules and procedures needed to become and remain in good standing as an athlete at Abell.

Abell Athlete expectations, requirements, and rules:

PHYSICAL:

Every athlete must have a physical every year to be in athletics. The physical must be administered by a doctor and filled out and signed completely in the MISD form for the current athletic season. Students cannot participate until this is completed. If a physical is not obtained within one week, students will be removed from Athletics and placed in another elective class.

ATHLETIC APPEARANCE:

Every athlete must suit up every day in athletics. The only exception is when an injury prohibits the athlete from changing. Suiting out for boys mean a solid white t-shirt and solid black shorts. Suiting out for girls mean a solid blue t-shirt and solid black shorts. Athletes may purchase an athletic packet with a t-shirt and shorts with the Abell emblem from the vendor selected that year. Athletes must wear appropriate athletic shoes for their respective sports-cleats for football, gym shoes for basketball, spikes or running shoes for track, and cleats for soccer. These must be purchased by the athlete. No Sperry’s, boots, sandals, or non-athletic shoes are allowed in athletics. No jewelry is allowed. This is for safety reasons. This includes but is not limited to, earrings, bracelets, watch, necklaces, or rings. LOCKER ROOM:

The locker room is a place to dress and store each athlete’s uniform and athletic equipment. Every athlete will be issued a lock and a locker. The locker room locker and lock are the responsibility of the athlete. Lockers must be kept clean, locked, and secure. The lockers are all made of metal and the locks can only be opened with that individual locks combination. It is imperative to secure the lock so that theft or vandalism does not occur. Any lock that needs to be replaced will cost the athlete $10 to replace.

Rules for the locker room:

1. Lock your locker EVERY TIME you finish changing. Hang the lock on locker as you change.

Never place your lock on the floor, on a bench or anywhere but, your locker.

2. Do not share lockers or combinations with anyone but, the coaching staff.

3. You are responsible for your belongings NOT THE COACHES! If it is lost or stolen YOU didn’t lock it up. It is next to impossible for anyone to steal your belongings if you lock it in your locker.

DISCIPLINE:

We have very high expectations for the athletes here at Abell. We feel the athletics class provides a great opportunity for students to learn not only to be great athletes but great young men and women.

WE CHOOSE TO REFER TO DISCIPLINE AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR IMPROVEMENT OR OFI’S:

Our discipline or OFI’S are based on conditioning used in athletics. These include:

Running, Push-ups, Sit-ups, Up-Downs, Air-Planes, Bear-Crawls, Crab-Walk, Rolls

All OFI’s will be done on our playing field we use for football, track or soccer or our gyms and concrete court used for basketball or our weight room used for off season. Our athletes and parents must understand and be aware that fields are subject to the elements of the West Texas. This includes small amounts of grass in some areas on the field, holes in the field, stickers and ants.

Discipline will occur for:

1. Violations of any of the rules.

2. Disrespect to a student, teammate, teacher or administrator.

3. Selfish actions (Any action that hurt the team and brings attention to oneself).

4. Failing classes.

5. Discipline may occur as a team when members of that team do not follow rules.

BE ON TIME:

Athletes must get to athletic class on time. Athletes must have a sense of urgency when getting to the locker room, getting suited up and into their squad lines for attendance.

Time Athletes have to be lined up for attendance: Boys Athletics Football=2 minutes after the bell =6 minutes total. Boys Off season/basketball/track/soccer=1 minute after the bell=5 minutes total. Girls athletics=5 minutes after the bell rings. (UNEXCUSED TARDIES WILL NOT BE TOLERATED and will require OFI”S).

BE AT PRACTICE AND AT GAMES:

If a player leaves a practice or a game early make-up workouts will occur.

If a player knows in advance that he will miss a workout or a game he must notify his coach within 24 hrs.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT AND BEHAVIOR:

Here at Abell we appreciate and encourage parental involvement.

We ask that all parents be positive towards players, coaches and officials.

Any negative behavior or remarks toward a player, coach or official could be cause for removal from a practice or a game.

If a parent needs to meet with a coach the parent must email the coach to set up a meeting during the coach’s conference time. NEVER CONFRONT A COACH DURING OR AFTER A PRACTICE OR A GAME.
