GOODWIN, JR., OF 14 RICHLAND COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST 15 SYMPATHY TO HIS LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND 16 HIS MANY FRIENDS. 17 18 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were 19 saddened to learn of the death of Reverend Willie J. Goodwin, Jr., 20 at the age of eighty on May 28, 2016; and 21 22 Whereas, born in Columbia on March 2, 1936, he was the oldest 23 son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Willie J. Goodwin, Sr. He attended St. 24 Martin Elementary Catholic School and graduated from Hopkins 25 High School in 1954; and 26 27 Whereas, Mr. Goodwin joined Beulah Baptist Church in Congaree 28 in 1957, and Mill Creek African Methodist Episcopal Church in 29 Lykesland in 1962, where he sang in the choir and served as 30 church secretary and as president of the Musical Choir for six 31 years; and 32 33 Whereas, he accepted Christ as his Savior at Mill Creek, and while 34 there, he coordinated a weekly Bible study group, served on the 35 board of deacons from 1969 until his ordination in 1981, and 36 served as vice president of Tom’s Creek Union through his Sunday 37 school affiliation; and 38 39 Whereas, Pastor Goodwin graduated from The Seminary at Morris 40 College School in Sumter; and 41 42

[1358] 2 1 Whereas, Pastor Goodwin served as the interim pastor of the 2 Jehovah Baptist Church in Columbia for one year, and in 1982, he 3 became Senior Pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Pontiac; and 4 5 Whereas, Pastor Goodwin mentored, licensed, and ordained many 6 preachers, served as the vice moderator of the Midlands Baptist 7 Association, and led revival services around the Midlands; and 8 9 Whereas, after twenty eight years of faithful service to Oak Grove 10 Baptist Church, he retired in 2010 and returned to New Light 11 Beulah Baptist Church in Hopkins, where he was elected as 12 interim pastor in 2011 and served for three years; and 13 14 Whereas, dedicated to his denomination and community, he served 15 in the Progressive National Baptist Convention; the South Carolina 16 Baptist Congress of Christian Education; Wateree Baptist 17 Association; Gethsemane Baptist Association; the Blythewood, 18 Lugoff, Elgin, Community Improvement Council; and the 19 Interfaith Ministers Council; and 20 21 Whereas, he was a dedicated employee of Shandon Greenhouse; 22 Colonial Foods, formerly known as Big Star; and G & P Trucking 23 Company until his retirement; and 24 25 Whereas, together with his beloved wife, Rebecca Jacobs 26 Goodwin, he reared six fine children: the late Willie J. Thompson, 27 Sr.; Wayne Goodwin of Newark, Delaware; Barry Goodwin of 28 Columbia; Janice Dinkins; and Wanda Herbert and Susan 29 Goodwin of Hopkins. His children blessed him with the love of 30 fourteen grandchildren, seven greatgrandchildren, and one 31 greatgreatgrandchild; and 32 33 Whereas, a man of prayer who always put God and family first, 34 Pastor Goodwin enjoyed watching Nascar racing, the Dallas 35 Cowboys, and his afternoon shows from his favorite chair and 36 having sole possession of the remote control; and 37 38 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are grateful 39 for the life and legacy of Pastor Goodwin and for the example of 40 sacrifice and kindness he set for all who knew him. Now, 41 therefore, 42 43 Be it resolved by the Senate:

[1358] 3 1 2 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 3 express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Reverend Willie 4 J. Goodwin, Jr., of Richland County and extend their deepest 5 sympathy to his large and loving family and his many friends. 6 7 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 8 the family of Reverend Willie J. Goodwin, Jr. 9 XX 10
