For entry into the Reception Class the admission limit has been set, at 15 places per year, by the Governing Body. At present, children can be admitted into the reception class at the beginning of the academic year in which their fifth birthday occurs. Parents may defer their child’s entry into school, in which case the place will be kept open for them during the reception year. An introductory part-time placement will be offered to allow a happy and orderly start to the child’s educational career. The academic year is from 1 September to 31 August. Please contact the Head Teacher if you wish to discuss your child’s specific admission arrangements. Priority will be given to all children from the civil parishes of Gunthorpe or Caythorpe who apply for a place for their child at Gunthorpe C of E School will be granted one subject to the statutory legal limit (30 per class at KS1). If there are more applications than the 15 places available, the admission criteria as laid down by the Governing Body will apply. Priority will be given in the following order to:

1. Looked after children. * 2. Those with a brother, sister, step or half-sibling, living in the same household, on the school roll at the time of entry to the school. 3. Those parents/children who are frequent** worshippers at a Church of England within the parishes of Gunthorpe or Caythorpe. 4. Those parents/children who are frequent** worshippers at any other Church of England. 5. Those parents/children who are currently members of any other Christian Church. 6. Those living nearest the school as the crow flies. Distances are measured from the entrance of the child’s home to the recognized main entrance to the school building.

* A looked after child is one who is in the care of the local authority or provided with accommodation with that authority. ** Minimum monthly attendance

Children who have a statement of special educational needs naming the school, or exceptional medical or social circumstances will be admitted. Confirmation will be required from other relevant professionals.

For criteria 3, 4 and 5, a supplementary admission form is attached see Appendix 1.

For criteria 6 LA recommended computer software (Arcview) will be used to determine distances.

The school Governors, under regulations, must review the admission criteria annually. For up to date information please contact the Head Teacher. A parent has the right to appeal in the event that their application was unsuccessful. The Governing Body will arrange for the appeal to be heard by a local appeal committee, whose members were not involved in the original decision. If this committee decides that a child should be offered a place at the school, then he or she must be admitted. DIOCESE OF SOUTHWELL & NOTTINGHAM Church schools and academies The Church of England has a strong tradition of involvement in the education system and places particular emphasis the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural, development of pupils to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experience of adult life.” In Nottinghamshire the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham is responsible for seventy schools and academies with local Christian foundations. These give expression to their faith by daily worship, by an integrated delivery of a broad and balanced National Curriculum including positive presentation of Christian faith and practice in Religious Education, by close connection with the local church, and in service to the community.

Church schools in the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham In the diocese of Southwell & Nottingham, there are 70 church schools. All share in common the fact that they have a Christian foundation and have an ethos of worship derived from the Church of England. Beyond this point they are divided into three groups: Aided schools, Controlled schools and Academies. The thirty-two Church of England Aided Schools in the diocese of Southwell & Nottingham have a majority of Foundation Governors appointed by the church in the local parish and the diocese and have a distinct place within the Church of England and its work in local communities. The thirty-four Controlled Schools in the diocese of Southwell & Nottingham have a majority of Local Authority Governors, but still have strong links with the local parish and church through their Foundation Governors. The local vicar is usually a Foundation Governor in all Church of England schools. The diocese now has four Church of England academies, and it is likely that other church schools may choose to become academies also. All Church of England schools and academies are required to teach Religious Education according to the doctrines and practice of the Church of England and in accordance with present legal and other directions of the Department for Education. This is the responsibility of the Governors of the schools, so that the teaching and learning which teachers and pupils share has clear Christian foundations and is shown in the way in which they work together in school, and in partnership with parents and local supporters. The school has the benefit of support from the Diocesan Education Department, and the National Society, which began church schools 200 years ago and continues to encourage the work of Church schools across the country. Each Church of England school also has the support of the local vicar, and this is very important to ensure the strength and value of the school as a Christian establishment. To help in this, every school has a Mission Statement, which sets out its aims to be an effective school with clear Christian foundations, and on this all the policies for managing the school, admitting the pupils, and developing the curriculum are based.

Church of England Schools Nationally Church of England Schools are there in order to provide the best possible education for the pupils who attend them. This they set out to do with the encouragement and support of parents, guided by Governors, and managed professionally by the Head teacher and her staff. The basis of the school as a community is the Christian faith, which is expressed in a way which is appropriate both to each child and to the local community. As a means to improve standards alongside Ofsted, a Church School inspection known as “A Section 48 Inspection’ has been developed to take place shortly after the main Ofsted inspections. Church schools and academies are inspected for ethos, collective worship and religious education. The section 48 inspection is often code-named SIAS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools). Each year the school is required to pass on the aggregate results of all the year 2 and year 6 pupils for Teacher Assessment & SAT tests. These are set out below as percentage figures. They may be rounded to 1% and so may not add up to 100. A = absent for all or part of the test / N = no grade / 1 - 6 = level. (There were 12 pupils in Y6 and 13 pupils in Y2 so each pupil = 8 % approx.)

COMPLAINTS There is an agreed LA procedure for dealing with complaints. First a parent is asked to informally bring to the notice of the staff the complaint and hopefully it can be resolved at this level. Should it need to be resolved at a more formal level, the procedure will be explained firstly by the Head Teacher who will advise on the necessary steps.
