Garden Internships – 2017 Note to potential applicants: We are seeking two highly motivated and energetic interns; one full- time, one part-time. This is a great opportunity to be involved with all aspects of a dynamic, 6- acre public garden, earn a good wage, and enjoy summer in Blacksburg.

Two internships are available. Full-time internships usually start mid-May, however you can start (part-time) early as April 15 - we are flexible!

- 1 Full Time – 40 hours per week for 12 weeks (The Mike and Susie Hildebrand Garden Landscape Internship) with a focus on landscape installation and maintenance. - 1 Full or Part Time – 20 to 40 hours per week for 12 weeks (The M. Evan Gardener Memorial Internship) includes some landscape/greenhouse but also assisting with tour groups, programs, and other outreach efforts. This internship could also start during Spring semester if interested.

Criteria for the Internships: . Applicant must be pursuing a degree in Horticulture, Turf, or related program . Recent graduates may apply as long as their degree requirements were completed no more than 12 months prior to the start of the internship. . Must be flexible in schedule and be available to work some evenings and weekends (with prior notice and not to exceed 40 hours/week). . Must be available to work the week prior to and during the Garden Gala (June 10). . The successful applicant has the opportunity to obtain an appropriate Pesticide Applicator License during the internship period. . All aspects of the applicant will be considered in making the decision, including work experiences, academic achievements, career goals, and whatever information is provided in the “personal statement.”

Both of these internships will involve many aspects of public garden maintenance and management, including landscape installation, maintenance, and other projects. Interns will also gain experience in many other facets of public horticulture, including garden tours, communicating with visitors, working with garden volunteers, participation in garden events, projects with school groups, plant records and labeling, garden interpretation, greenhouse crop production, etc. Interns may also have the opportunity for expense-paid travel and attendance to local conferences, field days, or other professional development opportunities.
