INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Information Technology, offered through the BTEC Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma and Extended Diploma, is a thriving, popular subject at Queen Mary’s College. At present the teaching team comprises two full-time and one part-time member of staff and approximately 200 students participate in these courses. The courses are taught in computer rooms equipped with a number of fully networked PCs running Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010 as well as SMART boards and projectors. A range of specialist software is used in the delivery of BTEC IT such as:  DreamWeaver CS5  Flash CS6  Microsoft Visual Studio 2013  Adobe Photoshop CS6  Mediator  Pivot  Blender

The IT infrastructure is supported and maintained by a Systems Manager and IT Support Technicians.

The Department has a reputation for being extremely supportive of its students and staff, and new staff will always be given assistance with resources and any other help they may need. Staff work closely together to plan schemes of work and share good practice. Teachers are committed to providing a high level of support for students and give freely of their time to ensure this takes place. It is the tradition at Queen Mary’s for staff and students to be on first name terms.

Our priorities are to maintain and extend our excellent outcomes in terms of student achievement and retention. We seek to ensure that we provide students with an experience of learning that is as vocationally relevant, interesting and active as possible. Links with local employers are good and the department takes every opportunity to enrich the students’ experience through work experience, guest speakers and educational visits. In short, we aim to ensure that Information Technology continues to flourish at Queen Mary’s College.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The person appointed will teach on the range of BTEC IT courses, depending upon knowledge and experience. The ability to teach programming is desirable, the programming language used is Python, however experience with other languages would be an advantage, for example: Delphi, C#, SQL or Java. The successful candidate will be able to make a real contribution to maintaining the quality of teaching and learning within the Department. In addition the person appointed will be a Personal Tutor to a group of students who are taking BTEC IT courses.

Teaching Duties

The person appointed will teach a timetable that may include a range of courses from the IT provision. Wherever possible there will be flexibility over the subjects to be taught, taking into account personal experience, skills, and preferences.

May 2017 1 Personal Tutor Responsibilities

The Personal Tutor has two primary responsibilities: to support and to inform.

To support:

The Personal Tutor plays a vital role in motivating, monitoring, supporting and guiding students’ academic progress through the College. Daily and weekly attendance reports, and the student profiling cycle provide valuable information about individual progress, and enable Tutors to identify problems at an early stage. It is the responsibility of the Tutor in the first instance to act upon this information as appropriate. This may mean, for example, offering advice, liaising with other subject staff or organising additional subject support. A specific area of support and guidance is in overseeing work experience and the students’ progression to HE or employment. Some students will experience personal difficulties during their time at College, and these may well be brought to the Personal Tutor, especially if academic progress is being hindered.

It is the responsibility of the Personal Tutor to ensure tutees are aware of College policies and procedures.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of illustrating that they fulfil the following criteria:

Qualifications  a good, relevant degree  a current recognised teaching qualification

Experience  recent teaching experience is desirable but applications from newly qualified teachers are equally welcome.

Knowledge  a good knowledge of curriculum developments at post-16 level including recent BTEC reforms.  the ability to teach up to level 3 (A-Level and BTEC)  a good understanding of BTEC course delivery and quality assurance systems  a knowledge of programming is desirable  a good working knowledge of a range of software used by the department such as DreamWeaver CS5, Flash CS6, Microsoft Visual Studio 2013, Adobe Photoshop CS6, Mediator, Pivot, Blender

Skills  excellent teaching skills  good organisational and time management skills.  good communication and interpersonal skills.  the ability to work with others as part of a close-knit team.  the ability to adapt and be flexible.

May 2017 2 CONTRACTUAL INFORMATION

Post Title: Teacher of Computer Science and/or IT

Reporting to: Head of Science

Working Time: Full-time is 195 days and up to 1265 hours per academic year. September 2016 start.

Other Terms and Conditions The Corporation has adopted the national recommendations on terms and conditions of employment as agreed by the National Committee for Teaching Staff (National Joint Council for Staff in Former Sixth Form Colleges). Other terms and conditions have been determined in the form of local agreements. All College staff are required to apply for a DBS Disclosure. In addition, new legislation in the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act will require you to register with the Disclosure and Barring Service. Any offer of employment will be conditional upon a satisfactory Disclosure and a six-month probationary period.

The College operates a no smoking policy.

On appointment all staff receive a handbook setting out expectations of Teaching staff working in Sixth Form Colleges.
