Questions, Quotes, and Notes (Q,Q,N) Reading Logs Overview 1. Reading logs prepare students for class discussion. 2. Follow the directions below for each reading assignment. All sections must be clearly labeled and MLA format used. 3. Logs will be initialed on the days they are due. 4. Logs will be collected and evaluated.

Your Q,Q,N Reading Logs will have several parts. 1. a brief ½ pg (12 lines MLA format) summary of assigned chapters focusing on key events and characters. Do not use Spark Notes or any other source to get these summaries. I want to see what you think are key events and characters, not some other outside source. 2. Discussion questions: write 2 discussion questions for the assigned chapters to be used in Socratic seminars. These can be in the form of Costa’s levels of questions. 3. Literature Focus Questions: a. Formalism (New Criticism): What are some themes of the work? *At some point you will be asked to address a theme from the novel from emergence to refinement, so keep this in mind as you choose your responses to the theme question. 1. You will identify a green word for the reading and use it in a one green word thesis statement. 2. Give a quoted piece of text with page number that acts as evidence. 3. Write a 3-4 sentence discussion of the theme using the quoted evidence to help you support your answer. Make at least one strong inference.

b. Essential Questions for To Kill a Mockingbird: How can literary texts be used to highlight what is going on in society, both good and bad? What can we learn from this and apply to our own lives? 1. You will write a topic sentence that answers the Essential Questions. 2. Give a quoted piece of text with page number that acts as evidence. 3. Write a 3-4 sentence response to the Essential Questions using the quoted evidence to help you support your answer. Make at least one strong inference.

You must address the Formalism (Theme) question and the Essential Questions in all of your QQN submissions.

*** Each Q,Q,N log will be turned in as a hard copy and also submitted to turnitin.com. Receipts will be collected the day the QQN is due.
