AP EUROPEAN HISTORY SUMMER ASSIGNMENT

HISTORY vs. HOLLYWOOD There are hundreds of movies about historical events and the people who experienced those events. Film is a great source to learn about history. However, keep in mind the limitations and potential bias that goes into making historically based movies. Being able to watch these movies critically is an important skill. For this project, you will watch TWO historically based films and write a historical film analysis. Choose a movie that is based on European History. Below is a list of suggestions if you have another movie in mind that is not on the list please email me and we can discuss it. You are responsible for getting a copy of the movie: Redbox, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, or the public library.

Film Analysis Instructions:

1. Typed, size 12. 2. Two pages (x 2) 3. Double-spaced

Please address the following questions in your film analysis:

1. Include the name of the film, year, rating, and director’s name. 2. Do you believe the film is a good source of history? Why or why not? Complete some basic research and compare the film with the real time period. 3. Were there any characters based on real people? Who were they and were they treated with historical accuracy? 4. Were there any real events (battles, revolutions, wars, laws, etc.) portrayed? 5. How does this film connect with our AP European History course? 6. What seems to be accurate or inaccurate in the film? Costuming, language, dance, culture, etc. Mention the sources you used to determine this. 7. What liberties does the film take with the past? What did they change just for the film? 8. In what ways will this film impact your reading of textbooks/class material? 9. Is the film primarily for entertainment purposes or is it really trying to work within the historical period? 10. What, if any, modern point is the film trying to make?

This assignment is due on the first day of school. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Alternative: You may read a historical novel either fiction or non-fiction and answer the same questions above in a book report format. (Still would be required to do 2)
