TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS

PURPOSE: To understand the usefulness of topographic maps in the study of landforms.

MATERIALS: Flagstaff East and West Topographic Maps.

DIRECTIONS: Use your maps to answer the following questions and/or make calculations.

FLAGSTAFF EAST QUADRANGLE

1. What is the contour interval?

2. What is the scale of the map?

1 mile = inches 1 mile = mm

3. What size quadrangle is Flagstaff East? 4. Locate and give the names of 2 cone shaped hills: and 5. What year was the map made? 6. What year was the map revised? 7. What is the lowest elevation on the map? 8. What is the highest elevation on the map? 9. What is the name of one lake on the map? 10. What does the green area indicate? 11. What does the purple area indicate? 12. What does the white area indicate? 13. Name two places on the map that have depression contours or hatcher marks: and 14. How can you determine if an area is level or not?

15. Name two level areas on the map: and 16. Calculate the average slope for Walnut Creek. Remember to show your work: a. Draw a straight line perpendicular to the contours on the slope. b. Measure the length of the line you drew and, using the scale of the map, convert that distance to feet. c. Determine the total elevation change along the line you drew (subtract the elevation of the lowest contour used from the elevation of the highest contour used). d. To calculate a percent slope, simply divide the elevation change in feet by the distance of the line you drew (after converting it to feet). Multiply the resulting number by 100 to get a percentage value equal to the percent slope of the hill. If the value you calculate is, for example, 20, then what this means is that for every 100 feet you cover in a horizontal direction, you will gain (or lose) 20 feet in elevation. (Remember to show your work)

17. Calculate the average slope for Rio de Flag from the sewage disposal plant to Highway 66. Show all your work:

18. How long is the west boundary of Walnut Canyon National Monument? 19. Draw a cross sectional profile of Sheep Hill:

20. In what general direction does Walnut Creek flow? 21. How far is it from 4th Street and Highway 66 to Walnut Canyon National Monument headquarters by way of road? 22. How far is it from 4th Street and Highway 66 to Walnut Canyon National Monument headquarters by way of a straight direct route? 23. Name the only permanent stream found on this map. 24. Name an intermittent stream. 25. What is the elevation of Cosnino Overpass on East Highway 66? 26. What is the elevation of Elden Ranger Station? 27. CHS is shown at what elevation on the map? 28. What is the change in elevation between the open spot in Turkey Hill on the top of Mt. Elden and CHS? 29. What is the elevation of Oak Spring on Mt. Elden? 30. Which side of Turkey Hill has the steepest slope? 31. Which side has the gentlest slope? 32. Determine the average slope from Mt. Elden Ranger Station to the “look-out” tower on top of Mt. Elden. Show all of your work:

FLAGSTAFF WEST QUADRANGLE

33. Draw the symbol for an unpaved road. 34. Riordan Overpass on the left side of the map is located at what Township and Range coordinates? Range: & Township: 35. What Section of the Range and Township is Fort Tuthill located in (lower portion of the map)? 36. What is the highest elevation you can find on the map? 37. What side of A-1 mountain would be the easiest to climb up? (i.e. north-east, west, south- west etc.) 38. Describe the general topography of Observation Mesa.

39. The top of Navel Observatory is at what elevation? 40. Determine the average slope from the top of Lowell Observatory to the top of A-1 Mountain.

41. What is the distance between Lowell Observatory and A-1 Mountain (as the crow flies)?

42. Using the following graph paper, draw a cross-sectional profile of a line drawn from Fort Tuthill to the Navel Observatory. (be accurate with your measurements)

43. How many feet deep is dry lake? 44. If you want to see what the rest of Woody Mountain looked like, you would need to take a look at what two maps of the area? 45. If no store in town sold those two maps, where could you write too to order them?

46. At the bottom of the south-west corner of the map is a the location of the Flagstaff city wells. Based upon the topographic information you note, determine why the wells are located where they are.
