Title Pull and strip runners

Level 2 Credits 8

Purpose This entry level unit standard is for people who are employed in the casings and calibrations department at meat processing plants whose job is to hang crowns and to pull and strip runners to company specifications.

People credited with this unit standard are able to: hang and prepare crowns; pull and strip runners; tank and soak runners; demonstrate team-work; and comply with organisational and statutory hygiene and safety requirements.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Hang and prepare crowns.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Inspection covers are placed on chutes before work commences in accordance with organisational requirements.

1.2 Chute blockages are reported in accordance with organisational requirements.

1.3 Crowns are attached to pulling bar in accordance with organisational requirements.

1.4 The number of crowns attached to each bar meets organisational requirements.

1.5 Ends of runners are separated from crowns in accordance with organisational requirements.

1.6 Pulling bars are aligned with pulling rollers in accordance with organisational requirements.

1.7 Pulled crowns are disposed of in accordance with organisational requirements.

Pull and strip runners.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Runner ends are stripped from crowns and fed into pulling rollers in accordance with organisational requirements.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Soak tanks are prepared in accordance with organisational requirements.

3.2 Knots of runners are suspended in soak tanks in accordance with company specifications.

3.3 The duration of soaking meets organisational requirements.

Outcome 4

Demonstrate team-work.

Evidence requirements

4.1 Tasks are completed within the time and space allocation determined by product flow and organisational requirements.

4.2 The quality and completeness of tasks meet the operational requirements of following co-workers.

4.3 Communication and feedback are provided to and requested from co-workers to maintain and improve task and product quality.

4.4 Co-workers are not endangered through the operator's methods and equipment.

4.5 Co-worker assistance is provided within the confines of product flow and operator space.

4.6 Machinery, equipment, and facility malfunctions are identified and reported to supervisory staff in accordance with organisational requirements.
