EDUCATION

Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, Michigan State University (1983). APA approved program and internship. Elected to Phi Kappa Phi honorary society. Dissertation: “The Relationship of Rating Error to Personality.”

Master of Social Work, Western Michigan University (1988). Graduated with honors. Concentration in social treatment.

M.A. in Clinical Psychology, Western Michigan University (1976). Graduated with honors. 60 hour degree including internship and thesis.

B.A. Albion College (1971). My major was German, minor Psychology. Study included semesters in Vienna, Munich and Berlin.

1988/89 Western Michigan University School of Social Work: Instructor. Part-time instructor acting as faculty liaison for first year social work students and teaching basic skill labs.

1987/89 Western Michigan University School of Social Work: Director of the Council of International Programs. Administered the exchange program, organized selections, developed and supervised agency placements, created community linkages, recruited host families and facilitated group process.

1986-87 Kalamazoo College: Visiting Assistant Professor in Psychology. Taught Abnormal Psychology, Interpersonal Communication, Motivational Psychology, and Humanistic Psychology.

1985-86 Western Michigan University School of Social Work: Instructor. Taught graduate courses in Human Behavior in the Social Environment and Social Treatment. Faculty liaison supervising second year field placements.

1984-87 Kalamazoo Consultation Center: Psychotherapist. Provided treatment to outpatient mental health clients. Treatment cases ranged from adjustment reactions to severe chronic mental illness.

1983-84 Gryphon Place, Kalamazoo: Agency Director. Administered four programs: emergency mental health services, the 24-hour crisis-line, substance abuse prevention, and substance abuse counseling for youth and families. Supervised a staff of 18 employees and 80 volunteers, managed a budget of over $400,000 and interfaced with the United Way, Kalamazoo County Department of Human Services, and the Office of Substance Abuse Services. Developed procedures for JCAH accreditation of the outpatient unit.

1976-81 Gryphon Place, Kalamazoo: Senior Therapist. Provided clinical supervision and treatment services in the outpatient substance abuse and mental health programs. The client population ranged from the treatment of suicidal clients referred from the helpline to clients experiencing both chronic mental illness and substance abuse problems.

Fetzer Institute: A grant for the renewal of the Fetzer Intern position was funded at the level of $12,300 for 2001/2002.

J.H. Kellogg Foundation: (2002) A grant of $10,000 was given to establish an endowment to support research and education in Holistic Health Care.

Fetzer Institute/Wege Institute for Body, Mind, Spirit (2000/2001): A 10,000 grant was received to fund a collaborative research project between WMU, the Fetzer Institute and the Wege Institute. Kalamazoo, MI. July 24-2, 2000. I was invited by the Fetzer Institute to present at their annual meeting focusing on contemplative traditions and health. I was asked to lead sessions focused on meditative practices from the Sufi tradition as they related to the theme of mystical love and healing. Other presenters included Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzberg and Thomas Keating.

Bad Bevensen, Germany: May 26,27,2000 Invited by the Caduceus Psychiatric Clinic offer a workshop to psychotherapists from northern Germany on the integration of spirituality and psychotherapy.

Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill.: May 5, 2000. I was invited to present a seminar at the Annual Conference on Internal Family Systems Therapy. The seminar was on healing the healer from an internal family systems therapy perspective.

Bad Bevensen, Germany: Nov. 14, 1999 I was invited by the Caduceus Psychiatric Clinic to offer a lecture to several hundred psychotherapists from the north German region on meditation and psychotherapy.

Prague, Czech Republic. May 29 & 30, 1999. I was invited by the president of the Czech Psychotherapeutic Society to present a two day seminar on systems theory and psychotherapy.

Prague, Czech Republic. May 24 - 28, 1999. I co-facilitated a cross-cultural workshop with American social work students and Czech youth workers. The workshop focused on an exchange of information and experiences regarding youth work in the Czech Republic and the United States.

Kiel, Germany: Kiel School of Social Work, April 1998. I taught two seminars on “A Holistic Perspective in Social Work Practice”.

Flensburg, Germany: Flensburg University, April 1998. I presented a two day workshop on health and human service worker burnout prevention, to health care faculty and students at the University.

Prague, Czech Republic: S.U.R. Group Psychotherapy Training, April 1998. I was the guest lecturer at an intensive training program for group psychotherapists. My seminars focused on spirituality and systems theory in the psychotherapeutic process.

One two-day seminar was on a systems approach to psychotherapy, the other was on spirituality and psychotherapy.

Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic. May 12 & 13, 1997. I was invited to present a two day seminar on systems theory and psychotherapy sponsored by Charles University.

Bruno, Czech Republic. May 9-11, 1997. I led a two day seminar on systems theory, psychotherapy and spirituality to psychologists from the Bruno region.
