Por um princípio científico, e não apenas moral e religioso, os princípios familiares tem de ser preservados. [...] Ao que nos parece a história focalisa bem os aspectos da corrupção moral, da insatisfação, mas não contraponhe nenhum valor etico à degradação ambiente. Nenhuma dificuldade surge na vida irreal e aventurosa dos que procuram a vida egoitica e barbara. Daí a maior dificuldade surgida na liberação da película [Noite Vazia]. Sex! Soccer! What do these stereotypes about Brazil reflect? Where do they come from? The Portuguese phrase país do samba e do futebol—“the country of samba and soccer”—expresses a sometimes ironic self-consciousness about these hallmarks of identity and perception of what Brazil is, both in Brazil and beyond. So, then, what is Brazil—or Brazilianness? In this class we will think about the ways in which people and cultures in Brazil have developed, been represented, been fantasized about, and why these things are so. We’ll explore where samba comes from and how it came to be Brazil’s “national” dance; why Brazil has so often been identified with sensuality and sexuality, especially sensual femininity; and what does make soccer important in Brazil. We’ll think about how and why ideas about Brazilianness range from deep, medieval Catholicism to oversexed libertinism; from “savage” and “underdeveloped” to urbane and techy; and from “Latin” to African to indigenous. At the heart of our stories will be questions about sexuality, gender, race, nation-building, and identity—we will use sources ranging from novels to sociological studies to films to analyze the ways these tropes have shaped the idea of Brazil, within and without. Caetano Veloso by Andy Beta Contributor In the history books, it was on March 31st, 1964 that a military coup ousted Brazilian President João Goulart. The U.S.-backed junta overtook all branches of government, ending nearly a century of newfound democracy for the one-time adjunct of the Portuguese empire and subjecting the country to two decades of increasingly repressive military rule. In Caetano Veloso’s 2003 memoir Tropical Truth: A Story of Music & Revolution in Brazil, he is adamant that the date is a lie: The coup actually took place on April Fool’s Day. Four years into the new regime, then-twentysomething Brazilian pop singer Veloso recorded his first solo album. But the first voice you hear on his 1968 self-titled release isn’t that of Veloso, but of Portuguese knight Pêro Vaz de Caminha, credited with discovering Brazil in the year 1500. He wrote a letter to Manuel I, King of Portugal raving about the fertile Brazilian land and how “all that is planted grows and flourishes,” convincing the king that the presumed island was worthy of colonization. Carta de Pero Vaz Caminha is considered the first literary text to emanate from Brazil but it gets parodied in a high nasally voice by Veloso’s drummer Dirceu. Little did the percussionist know that the tapes were running. And when the arranger of the session mimics the “exotic” sounds of the Brazilian rainforest, it points back to that time when Brazil was virgin land, before the empire arrived at her shores. Caetano Veloso’s debut album remains one of the most revolutionary albums released into the worldwide tumult of the 1960s. -

FROM BRAZIL TO THE WORLD Who are the Brazilian Voices Brazilian Voices is a female vocal ensemble engaged in musical performances as an instrument for the advancement of intercultural, educational, philanthropic and entertainment activities, with the purpose of creating a peaceful artistic movement with social responsibility to the local and global community. Five times award winner of the International Brazilian Press Awards, Brazilian Voices is composed of about fifty females who have been expanding Brazilian music in the United States, Brazil, Italy and Spain singing famous composers of Brazilian music. Brazilian Voices will immerse you in the beauty of the Brazilian culture with the educational program “From Brazil to the World”. Through a combination of informative presentations and live performances, the participants will learn in an interactive and interesting way about Brazilian rhythms and culture. Music allows all of us to develop a greater capacity for concentration, creative group work, and imagination, while fostering a greater sense of responsibility as well as more adaptive interpersonal involvement. Music also offers unique communication as it provides individuals with an alternative channel of interaction and participation with a wide range of abilities, from listening and active contribution to adept performance. With these objectives in mind, Brazilian Voices has developed this educational program that offers a broader understanding and greater appreciation of musical and cultural diversity. FROM BRAZIL TO THE WORLD What to Know About Brazil Discovered in 1500, Brazil was colonized by the Portuguese, but its population is very diverse, with many races and ethnic groups. Brazil declared its independence in 1822, now being a Federal Republic with a multi-party political system, holding democratic elections. -
