Rotary Moment: President Pete was searching for his Rotary moment this week. His thoughts were rambling back and forth wondering just who was on board with our Pay it Forward project when he received a picture from Christine showing her girls in the middle school. Low and behold in the background of the picture was a blackboard and on the blackboard was, you guessed it, “Pay it Forward” right out there for everyone to see. That was a great moment!

RYLA: We have our interviews scheduled for late March in plenty of time to select our students and get the completed paperwork in to the District. Kevin pointed out if a Rotarians child is qualified, and wants to attend, and assuming the interview goes well, they should be guaranteed a slot. We currently are budgeted for 7 students, 3 returning Rylans as facilitators, and one returning Rylan as a group leader.

Concord Pops: The Concord Rotary club is again sponsoring a Pops night with the Concord Band. It is Friday April 12th and the cost is $25 per ticket. Bob Cassidy has the tickets. The Concord band concerts are always terrific and always have guest soloists and surprises making for a most enjoyable evenings entertainment. If you and your family are interested please contact Bob and he will take care of the rest.

New Members: Our Rotary club is rebuilding. Under the strong leadership of Christine (last year) and Peter (this year) our club has mushroomed from 21 in Jan 2012 to 35 in March 2013. membership committee is doing something very very right! Today we inducted two more new members into our club. Mike Sullivan, who is the Regional Manager for Stop Hunger Now, and Debie Malone currently working as a Realtor at Re/Max in Chelmsford. Both bring with them dynamic resumes and a long list of accomplishments and are showing no signs of slowing down. Get to know them as they join with us to make Bedford, and our World a better place to live. Program: Chaz Weyer and Peter Jepson were with us today from Engineers Without Borders. A group of volunteers who develop and supervise construction of projects to help people around the world who need help. Thus far their organization has completed or are working on over 350 projects in 45 developing countries.

Today they talked to us about water projects they are currently working on in two different towns ( Mkutani and Mapinduzi) in Tanzania. The area is bone dry 8 months out of the year and the only source of water is a muddy stream which flows by the towns. People, domestic, and wild animals alike all share the same stream. Chaz’s short term project is to capture rain water off the medical clinic roofs in a cistern which they are building out of local brick and mortar. When done it will provide the cleanest water they have ever had. In the future they hope to dig a well 100 meters into the ground where there is abundant water but that is still a ways away.

The local people are very grateful for all that is being done for them but are falling short at doing the maintenance needed on the various improvements resulting in the work quickly deteriorating. To combat that Engineers without Boarders makes the local residents raise all the funds needed for materials and construction with the hope that will act as in incentive for the local villagers to keep the facility improvements in good working order.

Happy Dollars: Bill won the door prize  and Art gave the 50/50 draw his best shot, but unfortunately was just as unsuccessful as the rest of us. Sigh  Cliff was happy he has another pair of new sneakers from New Balance (something about his daughter working there---hmmm), Christine was happy to be seeing “once upon a mattress,” Linda was happy to have her daughter and her daughter’s fiancée in town for the weekend, somehow through all that her two grandchildren now have British accents?, Joel was sad the Bedford boys hockey team lost in the regional finals but was very happy for the excellent hockey they played all season, Diane was just happy and wore her traditional million dollar smile, Andy was happy to see the temperature steadily climbing (I do not think he likes winter; what do you think?), Britton was all hyped up about shorts and flip flops (do I sense a vacation?), Natt was thinking how great it was to be a Rotarian and passed around some photos of the group that traveled to Newport RI to see the Polo matches last year he would like to see us do more of that this year, Pete was real happy Ralph’s wife Jean is a graphics artist and did our Pay it Forward posters.
