SUMMARY The teacher will educate adult learners to improve their basic skills in reading, writing and math, and provide instruction to students preparing to take the GED exam. Morning hours (9:00 – 11:30 a.m.) Ten hours per week, Monday through Thursday. Classes will be held at the Michigan Works! building in Standish.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: Instruct adult learners using the ABE content standards developed by the State of Michigan Adult Education Taskforce. Instruct adult learners working at Reading and Math grade levels between 4.0-8.9. Emphasize skill development in the context of workplace skills Instruct adult learners functioning at and above the 9.0 grade level in Reading and Math to prepare them for the GED exam. Assist participants in completing their Adult Learning Plan. Complete participant pre and post assessments using the CASAS test. Create a learning environment conducive to student success by using a variety of instructional teaching methods to meet the needs of the students Provide support and encouragement to adult learners Abide by the information contained in the Instructional Handbook Complete and submit accurate attendance records after each class session Complete and submit grades by the required deadlines Communicate all testing, attendance, and grade information to the Adult Education office in a timely manner. Attend required instructor meetings and professional development trainings Complies with State and Federal statutes and Board Policy Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Adult and Continuing Education
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Must hold a valid Michigan Teaching License; must be Secondary Certified. Experience teaching adult learners preferred; Experience in differentiated instruction and contextualized learning preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
REASONING ABILITY Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear and operate a computer. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and depth perception.
