BIOGRAPHY

Richard J. Umbdenstock is President and CEO of Providence Services, Spokane, WA. Providence Services is the parent corporation for the healthcare, higher education and social service corporations sponsored by the Sisters of Providence – Mother Joseph Province. Its sponsored ministries include: nine acute care hospitals, several skilled nursing facilities and home health entities; a regional reference laboratory; a university; an adult day health center; an early childhood development center; a personal care services agency for rural homebound clients; and their various corporate affiliates.

Prior to assuming this position in 1993, Mr. Umbdenstock spent 11 years as an independent consultant to voluntary hospital governing boards in the United States and Canada. His earlier experience includes hospital administration and hospital association staff positions. He is the author of several books and articles for the hospital board audience, and has authored national survey reports for the American Hospital Association and its Hospital Research and Educational Trust, and the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Mr. Umbdenstock currently serves on the boards of the Spokane Catholic Foundation and Premier, Inc. He has served on the boards or advisory boards of: the American Hospital Association; Gonzaga Preparatory School, Spokane; the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education, Spokane; Family-A-Fair, Spokane; the Spokane Regional Chamber of Commerce; Group Health Northwest, Spokane; and, The Cheswick Center, Rockville, MD. Mr. Umbdenstock also is a member of the Healthcare Research and Development Institute, LLC (HRDI), Pensacola, FL. He is a Diplomat of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Mr. Umbdenstock received a B.A. degree in Politics in 1972 from Fairfield University, Fairfield, CT, and a Master of Science degree in 1974 in Health Services Administration from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. In May, 2003, Mr. Umbdenstock was awarded a Doctor of Laws honorary degree from Gonzaga University, Spokane, WA.

Mr. Umbdenstock and his wife, Barbara, have four adult children.
