Mason-Dixon GSP Club’s Horseback Field Trial Acting Field Trial Chairperson: Queries to Ken Huyser, 301-898-9460 [email protected] 6 – 8 November 2009

The MDGSPC Spring Horseback Field trial was held on April 17-19, 2009 at Petersburg, Delaware. We had a full 3 days of dogs for the event and the best weather of the season. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. We had good turn outs for the dinners on Friday and Saturday evening in the clubhouse. Many thanks to KC and Jeremy for running a Calcutta for the Amateur Gun Dog Stake. And thank you to all who bid on the dogs. Greg Ritchings came out the winner with the first and second winners from the Calcutta. And the first place dog. Thank you to the people who helped clean up after the dinners and helped with the club house: KC Shore & Jeremy, Jim & Kathy Kuhns, Stephanie Snyder, Andrea and Hunter Smith, Betsy Archer, Connie and Andy Valentino.

We can never thank the judges enough for the long hours in the saddle – Bob Amato, Bill Bruchey, Art Cohen, Steve Henrikson, Howard Shultz and Gene Thomas.

My kitchen help was invaluable; ‘Connie Valentino’ came on Friday and stayed for the duration. I could not have done it without her. Thank you, thank you, thank you. While Connie was in the kitchen ‘Andy Valentino’ handled the dog wagon or planted birds or whatever Ken needed to keep the event running very smoothly. Thank you, thank you, you all are the best.

Pat Dady, Jim Quillen and Ray Glen helped with gunning and line marshaled. Many thanks to you all. Al Lucas took the pictures of the winners for me. Thank you so much. Congratulations to the winner of the Derby Stake who won the newest revolving trophy in memory of the Lou Foehrkolb. This trophy was donated by Jamie O’Donnell, Rsh Crk Smpr Fi Marine ‘Raider’ owners Al & Terry Lucas. Thank you to all who entered the event and supported us again. Club members supporting the event were: Scott, Andrea & Hunter Smith, Stephanie Snyder, Al Lucas, Bill Evans, Dan Rice, Barbara Kramer and Pat Dady. Mason-Dixon GSP Club’s Mid-Year Rescue Report Rescue Chairperson–Rob Loew 301-972-0868 [email protected]

Mid – Atlantic GSP Rescue is the clubs agent for Rescue, a number of club members are fosters or volunteers for Mid – Atlantic.

We are half way through the year and have more dogs than foster homes and less adopted than expected. Costs are more (Duh, the economy is not great and one reason why more dogs are being turned in)

Dogs come to rescue from shelters that we solicit for GSP’s that need homes. They are strays that cannot be identified or are not claimed. Usually they have exceeded their stay (not adopted) and are scheduled to be PTS. Others come from abusive or other situations that Animal Control officers have determined to be un-fit for the dogs. Some come from owner turn-ins, either because they did not understand the breed or health or family situations have changed and they can no longer keep the dog. Special cases are like the dogs from Missouri. ( three came to Maryland) where the breeder torched the kennel and set 150 dogs loose to fend for themselves.

National GSPCA Rescue has a process that each regional rescue needs to follow for support. The first step is to ID the dog as a GSP. (Mixes sometimes slip under the bar) The second step is to find a foster home for the dog and get the dog to the foster.

Fostering is not easy. It means taking in an un-known dog to your home. It means establishing a paper trail for the dog. Taking it to the Vet, getting meds (neutered or spayed) , micro-chipping, doing socialization, basic training, then pictures, and writing a Bio for the dog without becoming too attached. When accepting a dog for fostering the duration is un-known. (I have had 7 in one year and one for 9 mos.)

Once the dog is posted the adoption process begins. Each potential adopter fills out an application. Rescue reviews the application for potential problems or “red’ flags.” Responses that require more conversation to identify a pet home are: I want a hunting dog, no fenced yard, or the dog sleeps in an outside kennel.

This process is not immediate and depends on the volunteers to call. If the conversation is OK the next step is a home visit by another volunteer, usually with a GSP. This is a reality check. Do the potential adopters understand a 65# dog with 4 paw-drive and a hunt drive. Are they ready for the exercise required? Do they really understand that these dogs will open cabinets, chew cans of food, and need to learn your rules? (I took care of Pat’s dogs for a weekend and after a nap found my glasses in the back yard, beyond repair and wore sunglasses for the next week, sorry Greta I had to tell.)

If the adopters understand the reality check they are allowed to view dogs that are in foster and waiting for adoption. Appointments are scheduled to see the dog for adoption. The suggestion is to bring other dogs and children to the meet adoptee. The adoption decision is up to the foster; it is their name on the contract. It is a three step process: the application, the home check, and the foster. It takes the time of a number of volunteers and does not go quickly. Communications with people is not the same as with dogs.

Rescue is to re-home GSP’s for forever homes. Yes there are problems with dogs, people and process but the Kleenex Kodak session at adoption is worth it. Since January the club rescue fund has $35 in micro chips and $20 in donations. We have also forwarded $120 in cash and $350 TD to Mid – Atlantic.

Since we increased adoption donations, adoptions are keeping up fairly well with vet expenses. The Mid Atlantic Financials for 2008 (81 dogs re-homed) are:

Fostering. Club members that are registered with Mid – Atlantic GSP Rescue, as fosters or volunteers, are: Pat Dady****Rob Loew****Parry Tomlin****Hunter Shelly****Carol White****Faith Fields The Club has a Rescue account as part of the club treasury. Money from sales of rescue items, (collars, shirts, dog toys, and Micro - chipping go to this account). Cash contributions go directly to Mid – Atlantic.

Boarding for Rescue Donation. We have members who will board your dog for short periods in exchange for your donation to Mid – Atlantic which is tax deductible, everyone wins. Contact Rob Loew for information about rescue or boarding services: [email protected] or 301-972 -0868 Mason - Dixon Rescue Micro Chips

Mason - Dixon GSP Club Rescue has purchased micro chips from Companion Animal Recovery (part of the AKC). This is a service to the members of the MDGSP Club. Micro chips are a positive method to have your dog identified if lost. Humane societies and shelters as well as veterinarian’s check for micro chip ID's and then call the registered owner for animal recovery. We are offering these chips and service, including registration for $30. They can be inserted at club events or by contacting Rob Loew. If you are a breeder and want to micro chip a whole litter we can do a deal. Purchase of MDGSP rescue items or Micro - chipping services support the clubs fund to support National and Mid - Atlantic GSP Rescue.
