Tide Simulator Computer Activity 15 Pts Name ______

Tide Simulator Computer Activity 15 pts Name ______Google “Sunshine Utah Tides Lab” 1. Click on “Tide Simulator”. (The third one down) 2. When you see the moon travelling around the earth and the earth travelling around the sun, click on the “show Spring/Neap tides” box. 3. Make a mental note of the position of the moon during spring tides. Hit stop if you need to. 4. Sketch below (around the earth) the TWO POSITIONS of the moon that result in a spring tide. Also, show the shape of the “ocean” around the earth by drawing the same “particles” that they illustrate. 2 ½ pts total Sun Earth

5. Restart the simulation (if you stopped it), then examine when the moon is in the neap tide position. 6. Sketch below (around the earth) the TWO POSITIONS of the moon that result in a neap tide. Also, show the shape of the “ocean” around the earth by drawing same “particles” that they illustrate. 2 ½ pts total Sun Earth

7. a. Which position above, (spring tides or neap tides) will result in larger tidal bulges on earth? ½ pt ______b. Explain (with a complete sentence) why the bulges are bigger in that position. 1 ½ pts ______8. How many spring tides and how many neap tides occur on earth every month according to this simulation? (Hint: Watch the month on the left side of the screen, and out of the corner of your eye, watch the “spring and neap tide” change. ½ pt each

______spring tide(s) per month ______neap tide(s) per month 9. a. From the simulation, does the tidal bulge follow the position of the sun or the position of the moon?

______½ pt b. Which object then, the sun or the moon, is more influential in producing tidal bulges?

______½ pt 10. The sun is much larger than the moon! Why then does it have less effect on the earth’s tides? 1 pt

______

11. a. How many high tides would somebody experience in a 24 hour period if they stood on a beach in Florida? Or any beach on an ocean for that matter… ______½ pt

b. How many low tides would be experienced during this 24 hour period, standing on a Florida beach? Again...in Florida or any beach… ______½ pt

12. Which would produce a greater height difference in water level between high tide and low tide for someone standing on a beach in Florida –a spring tide or a neap tide? ______½ pt 13. a. Considering your answer above (#12), try to decide which moon position would produce a greater height difference in water level between high tide and low tide for someone standing on a beach in Florida… during a full moon or during a half moon? ______½ pt b. 1 pt e.c. FULLY explain your answer to #13 a. ______14. Go back to the original website and click on “Tide Level Observer”. “Water level” is measured in meters and is located above the moon in the black box. a) Click on January 3 (Full Moon). Click the Red Dot “RECORD DATA” b) Click on January 4. Click the Red Dot c) Continue these steps for January 5th – 10th (Jan 10th is a half moon) d) Click “View Table” and record your data table here (below on this page) Do NOT print this.
