Explanatory notes
1 Maaga variations are acceptable in meeting the requirements of this unit standard. Endorsement of village variations may be conducted by pulotu.
2 Definitions Audience refers to a group of three or more people; Fakaholoaga refers to the process by which something is learnt or knowledge is transmitted; Maaga is any one of the 14 villages that the learner identifies with through either matrilineal or patrilineal lines, or self-identifies through acceptable fakaholoaga; Pulotu refers to Niue village or community recognised and/or appointed experts. Tau leo fakatagi fakamotu are musical instruments played in a traditional Niue style; Musical instruments may include –kilikilihō (a nose flute), pū (a mouth-blown flute, made from loku stem, bamboo, mei, or wood), fua pū (a conch shell), fua fufu (a sea shell which has a hole made on the base and which has a very high pitch), ukulele, kitā (a guitar), lulu (a shaker with seeds or beads inside it), nafa (a wooden drum), pelelafa (the midriff part of a coconut frond split into several sections of various thickness, which when hit on a hand, thigh or elsewhere makes clapping sounds), logo (a wooden slit drum or gong), tini apa (a tin container); Traditional refers to a specific body of knowledge and practice held by pulotu imparted to learners through community resources such as cultural leaders and advisors.
3 Assessment of skills for this unit standard will occur in group situations, but assessment must be of individual competence.

Range two different group performances of at least three minutes each; tau leo fakatagi fakamotu must include – one wind, one stringed and one percussion instrument over the two performances.
Evidence requirements
1.1 Tau leo fakatagi fakamotu are played in a group to produce music in traditional Niue style.
1.2 Use of tau leo fakatagi fakamotu is sustained throughout each performance.
1.3 Tau leo fakatagi fakamotu are played to complement the group performance.
Range timing, cues, rhythm and volume.
