4. Update on soil-related activities in North America Yvette Lowney: reminder: human bioavailability session at SETAC NA 2014 on Tuesday. Theresa Phillips: update on soil webinar idea from last year and this is soil chemistry geology basic course (effect of soil type, soil texture, and other physical and chemical properties on soil bioavailability). Proposal was sent to Bruce Vigon, Science Manager for SETAC NA. Volunteers and additional narrators are needed, and possible help from Laurel, Yvette, Ron, Nick and Mike. Ron Checkai: a total of 6 new papers on soil cleanup levels in IEAM in July. Discussion of the following: soil cleanup levels should not be below background; microbes should be part of the RA; and the importance of fate studies. Ming Fan: a good understanding of sludge application and practices is critical for soil risk assessment. There is some literature available for NA and Europe but very limited for ‘emerging economy’ countries, such as China. Propose a discussion to obtain more information on this area and potentially seek feedback from Global Soils Advisory Group members. Nick commented that there might be an interesting session for next SETAC NA conference to have a debate on pro and cons for beneficial use of sludge. Mike will post our meeting minutes on the SETAC website.
