Pierson Library Calendar of Events ~ July 2014

Tuesday 7/1, 7/8, 7/15, 7/22, and 7/29 at 1:00 p.m.: Spy Club! – Calling all sleuths, detectives, and secret agents! Solve puzzles, build a spy kit, learn to use ciphers and break codes, and take part in fun challenges! Train your brain to solve mysteries! Please register.

Tuesday 7/1 at 3:00 p.m.: Tuesday Tea – Our monthly tea-and-treat gathering continues with a casual discussion of Inspector Lynley! Whether you are a fan of the Elizabeth George books or a fan of the BBC series, be sure to join us for conversation, community, and delicious treats. RSVP requested.

Tuesday 7/1 at 7:00 p.m.: Geek Mountain State Sci Fi/Fantasy Book Discussion: The Emperor’s Blades – This NEW monthly book discussion group meets to chat about the highly-reviewed book The Emperor’s Blades, written by VT author Brian Staveley who will join us for the discussion! Library Journal gave this book a starred review, saying “A complex and richly detailed world filled with elite soldier-assassins, mystic warrior monks, serpentine politics, and ancient secrets. Readers of Sara Douglass's Wayfarer novels and George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series should enjoy this.” Books are available at local libraries and The Flying Pig Bookstore. Pizza will be served – so please register (so we know how much to order!). This book discussion is co-hosted by the Pierson Library and Geek Mountain State (www.geekmountainstate.com).

Tuesday 7/8 at 10:30 a.m.: Genealogy Resources – Pierson Library volunteer John Kelley guides genealogy beginners to online sources of information and explains what can be found using sources such as Heritage Quest, Ellis Island Genealogy Learning Center, and more. Computers will be available, but please feel free to bring your own laptop. Please register.

Wednesday 7/9 at 10:30 a.m.: “The Music in Me” Musical Story Time with Dawna Hammers – Join us for a musical celebration of our individuality and sharing your song with the world!

Thursday, 7/10 at 1:00 p.m.: Magician Tom Joyce – Magic or science? Maybe a little bit of both! Stop in to see this renowned VT performer work his magic, and leave wondering how he did it!

Thursday 7/10 at 6:30 p.m.: American Institute of Architects Reception for the Architectural Excellence Award Winners – Meet this year’s winners in the Vermont Chapter of the AIA’s Architectural Excellence Awards, see designs entered in the competition, learn about local architectural designs and projects, and enjoy light refreshments as we host the Vermont Chapter of the AIA.

Tuesday 7/15 at 6:30 p.m.: Book Discussion: Olive Kitteridge – Our monthly Tuesday evening book discussion group meets to chat about Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout. This Pulitzer Prize-winning, highly-rated novel links 13 tales that, according to Publisher’s Weekly, “present a heart-wrenching, penetrating portrait of ordinary coastal Mainers living lives of quiet grief intermingled with flashes of human connection…. The collection is easy to read and impossible to forget. Its literary craft and emotional power will surprise readers unfamiliar with Strout.” Books are available at the front desk.

Wednesday 7/16 at 10:00 a.m.: Book Discussion: Sherlock Holmes Stories – The Wednesday morning book discussion group considers two Sherlock Holmes short stories: “A Study in Scarlet” and “The Sign of the Four” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Two of Doyle’s most well-known stories featuring Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson, the discussion is sure to be a lively one! Books are available at the front desk.

Thursday 7/17 at 1:00 p.m.: Goo! Gack! Slime! Try your hand at creating a variety of goopy concoctions. Is it liquid? Is it solid? Is it sticky gross and drippy? Put on some old clothes and come get your hands dirty at this fun event for folks who like to mix, concoct, and experiment! Please register.

Thursday 7/24 at 1:00 p.m.: Night Sky – Learn your way around the night sky. Get to know the phases of the moon using Oreo cookies, make a replica of the moon to take home, and learn a constellation or two to boot! Please register.

Tuesday 7/29 at 6:45 p.m.: “The Slanted Screen” - Indieflix Independent Movie Night – Join us as we live-stream this award-winning documentary examining Hollywood’s portrayals of Asian men in film and television. The 60-minute film includes interviews with actors, directors, and producers including Jason Scott Lee, Bobby Lee, and Justin Lin. A brief discussion will follow the screening. Indieflix is a streaming movie service that provides unlimited access to award- winning shorts, feature films, and documentaries from around the world. You, too, can access this service with your library card. Look for the link on www.piersonlibrary.org

Wednesday 7/30 at 10:30 a.m.: “Beach Day” Musical Story Time with Dawna Hammers – Hop into your swimsuit and head to the library for a morning of beach songs and stories! Attendees will bring home a beach bucket of their very own!

Thursday 7/31 at 1:00 p.m.: Kitchen Science – Use everyday materials, including food, candy, and condiments to conduct fascinating experiments. Walk on raw eggs without breaking them, blow up marshmallows, and much more!
