KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED: Basic knowledge of natural systems, ecology and biodiversity. Basic understanding of environmental issues and education processes. Must be able to effectively communicate with groups of all ages. Creative writing skills and program development knowledge required. Experience in designing and leading programs for groups of all ages. Must work well independently. Leadership skills and understanding budget processes a must. Must possess staff recruitment, hiring and training skills.

COGNITIVE SKILLS REQUIRED: Design, develop, manage and lead community- based programs including consecutive week camp programs. Understand program and educational goals and objectives. Be able to communicate and develop program goals and objectives with Irons Oaks staff and community partnerships. Respond to questions from program participants at the appropriate age level. Understand, administer and work within program budgetary requirements. Hire and train other staff members as needed.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Minimum bachelor’s degree in education, recreation or a related field preferred. Two years supervisory experience. Experience or strong interest in outdoor and environmental education. Training staff and budget administration skills required.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: Under direction from the Environmental Education Coordinator, the Community Programs Supervisor assists with the design and implementation of short-term and consecutive week programs including, but not limited to summer programs, birthday parties, senior programs and special events. The Community Programs Supervisor purchases program materials and is responsible for prop construction, program write-ups, staff training and evaluations. The Community Programs Supervisor must be able to effectively communicate with diverse groups, including but not limited to pre-K through 12 participants and group leaders, seniors, and organizations involved with collaborative programming efforts. The Community Programs Supervisor must understand and manage the budget of each individual program, and hire and train staff if necessary. The Community Programs Supervisor works closely with the Environmental Education Coordinator to ensure that programming needs are met.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (DUTIES):

1. Coordinate and plan seasonal programs including but not limited to: Native Plant Sale, Woodland Pumpkin Hunt, Fairy Tales and Spirits of the Oaks. 2. Design and conduct on-site programs for short-term and consecutive week programs including, but not limited to Nature Rangers, summer camps, birthday party programs, special events, seasonal community programs. 3. Administrate these programs, including write-ups, purchase, construction and care of program materials, budget administration and follow-up / evaluation. 4. Park District computer enrollments and payment tracking. 5. PR coordination of program inclusions in the Park District (HF, OF and partner communities) program brochures. 6. Generation of program marketing flyers, press releases, etc. 7. Communicate program services and scheduling over the phone, with follow-up confirmations. 8. Assist the Environmental Education Coordinator with habitat management and restoration efforts. 9. Hire and train additional staff as necessary.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Assist with special events. 2. Assist with website revisions. 3. Attend staff meetings. 4. Participate in Park District working committees. 5. Provide administrative reports and presentations as requested. 6. Assist with other department programs (Adventure Center and Environmental Education, Irons Oaks Foundation)

OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS: 1. Evening, weekend and holiday work required. 2. Assistance with special events. 3. Valid driver’s license. 4. Other duties as assigned.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS: Will be exposed to all weather conditions.
