The Foundation is the custodian of privately and publicly donated research funds used to support projects conducted at Oregon State University (OSU) and throughout the state. During the 80 plus years since its inception, the Foundation has provided leadership, incentive and moral support to a vigorous research program across agricultural and natural resource programs at OSU. To date the Foundation has received and managed over $174 million in donor gifts and grants to support research on a wide range of topics. In addition, the Foundation itself has provided over $16.4 million of its own funds, via its Competitive Grants Program, to initiate innovative research studies proposed by agricultural and natural resource scientists at OSU. The organizers of the Foundation envisioned a strong collaborative partnership between OSU and Oregon’s diverse agricultural industries. We believe we have achieved that goal. 4 Agricultural Research Foundation 2014 - 2015 Annual Report Annual Report - Page Layouts.indd 5 11/16/2015 10:27:31 AM ARF Honor Roll Robert M. Kerr Robert Kerr was a Portland attorney who worked with Dean Schoenfeld in establishing the Agricultural Research Foundation (ARF) in 1934. While never an ARF Board member, Kerr served as attorney for ARF into the mid-1980s, a span of nearly 50 years. Kerr was born on June 6, 1904, and died on December 11, 1988. He was a graduate of Oregon State College (OSC; now Oregon State University - OSU) and was the son of William Jasper Kerr, the eighth President of OSU and first chancellor of the Oregon State System of Higher Education. Robert Kerr was a storied member of the OSC debate team during his time on campus. In the early 1900s, debate teams brought as much glory to universities as did athletic teams. Kerr participated in debates across the nation and later used his speaking skills in the military as a Japanese war crimes prosecutor. Besides his long service to ARF, Kerr was active in civic affairs. He was a member of the Portland City Club and led educational campaigns on state ballots measures, several dealing with higher education improvements. He was one of three founders of the OSU Foundation in 1947. ARF Honor Roll 2011-12: Roger Detering 2012-13: William Schoenfeld, R. L.
